Zay Jones Career

College career

As a true freshman at East Carolina in 2013, Jones played in 13 games and made eight starts. He finished second on the team with 62 receptions for 604 yards and five touchdowns. He had 81 receptions for 830 yards and five touchdowns as a sophomore. He made 98 receptions for 1,099 yards and five touchdowns as a junior. During his senior season in 2016, he set a school record for receptions in a game with 22, breaking Justin Hardy's previous record of 17 games, then going on to break the school record for receptions in a season, which was also held by Hardy, nine games into the season. Jones became the NCAA Division I football all-time single season receptions record holder with 158 for the 2016 season, smashing the previous record of 155 set by wide receiver Freddie Barnes of Bowling Green in 2009. Jones also set the NCAA Division I football career record of 399, defeating his former ECU Pirate teammate and future NFL receiver Justin Hardy's all-time NCAA record of 387. Jones was also selected as one of three finalists for the 2016 Biletnikoff Award, which is given annually to the nation's top receiver in college football.

Professional career

Jones was invited to the Senior Bowl and had worked hard during the week leading up to the game. Since making six receptions for 68 receiving yards and a touchdown for the North, who lost 16–15 to the South, he dominated both teams and greatly improved his draft stock. He also attended the NFL Combine and positional drills. Jones was also on display at Pro Day in East Carolina, but decided not to conduct positional drills for team members and scouts. The overwhelming majority of NFL draft experts and analysts expected Jones to be selected in the second round. NFL media analyst Mike Mayock, the fifth best wide receiver by ESPN, was ranked the fourth best wide receiver in the draft by ESPN, and Sports Illustrated and NFLDraftScout.com ranked him as the sixth best wide receiver in the draft.

Jones was selected by the Buffalo Bills in the second round with the 37th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. On May 18, Jones was signed to a four-year, $6.77 million contract with three-year guarantees and a signing bonus of $3.07 million.

Jones made his NFL debut on September 10, 2017. In the 21-12 victory over the New York Jets, he had one reception for 21 yards. He barely missed out on a potential game-winning pass from quarterback Tyrod Taylor on fourth down late in the Carolina Panthers' 9–3 loss. He had six receptions for 53 yards against the New York Jets in Week 9, his first career receiving touchdown. Jones finished with 316 receiving yards and two touchdowns in 15 games (ten starts) of his rookie year in 2017.

Jones revealed he had been playing much of the year with a torn labrum in the shoulder, which necessitated offseason surgery. Jones missed significant portions of OTA's this season due to another injury resulting from an offseason game and then beginning training camp on the non-football injury list.

Despite a low-volume passing offense, Jones showed improvement early in the season as his catch percentage increased sharply from his rookie season. Josh Allen, a rookie quarterback, rushed for 57 yards against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 2. It was his first personal record for his longest reception. The pass covered 63.8 yards in the air, marking the second longest air distance for a completed pass by NFL NextGen Stats since its inception. Jones scored his first touchdown of the season against the Houston Texans on a 16-yard field pass from Nathan Peterman (who was forced to leave the game after Allen was injured), giving the Bills the lead for a brief time.

Jones had another touchdown against the New York Jets in Week 10, a new career record. In a 21-17 loss to the Miami Dolphins in Week 13, he scored two touchdowns in his first game with multiple receiver touchdowns two weeks later.

After the team released Kelvin Benjamin, Jones was the Buffalo's leading receiver during the 2018 season. He had 652 yards and seven touchdowns on his way to the game.

Jones was traded to the Oakland Raiders for a 2021 fifth-round pick on October 7, 2019.

Jones scored his first touchdown since 2018 in a 34–24 Raiders victory over the New Orleans Saints in Allegiant Stadium since relocating to Las Vegas. Jones was fined US$15,000 by the NFL on October 5, 2020 for attending a maskless charity benefit hosted by teammate Darren Waller during the COVID-19 pandemic, in breach of the NFL's COVID-19 conventions for the 2020 season.

Jones re-signed with the Raiders on a one-year deal on March 19, 2021. Jones had two receptions for 46 yards, including a 33-yard touchdown on Monday Night, as the Raiders defeated the Baltimore Ravens 33-27 in overtime.

Jones signed a three-year, $24 million deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars on March 16, 2022.
