Zac Taylor (born May 10, 1983) is an American football coach and former quarterback who is the head coach for the Cincinnati Bengals of the National Football League (NFL).
From 2005 to 2006, he played college football and was the starting quarterback for Nebraska.
After serving as the quarterbacks coach for the Los Angeles Rams in 2018, he was hired as the head coach for the Bengals.
Personal life
In 2008, Taylor married Sarah Sherman, daughter of former Green Bay Packers' head coach Mike Sherman. They have four children together.
Taylor has three siblings, including Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator Press Taylor. Their father, Sherwood, was a defensive back and captain for Oklahoma and head coach Barry Switzer from 1977 to 1979.
College career
Despite Taylor's record-breaking career at Norman High School in Norman, Oklahoma, only a handful of colleges have accepted him. And his hometown school, the Oklahoma Sooners, had to admit him. He signed with the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in 2002, where he redshirted his first year and landed in as a backup plan the next year, the first time he attempted in those two years. From there, he moved to Butler Community College in Kansas, where he had a breakout season, leading Butler to the NJCAA championship game and receiving second-team NJCAA All-American awards.
Taylor spent time at multiple NCAA Division I colleges, including Memphis, Marshall, and Nebraska, after his 2004 season. Nebraska had to abandon their long-running running/option game in favour of a completely new, West Coast offense led by new coach Bill Callahan. The Huskers had a rebuilding season in 2004, going 5–6 and missing a bowl bid for the first time since 1968. The Huskers' lack of quarterbacks at the time led to his selection late in the 2004-05 offseason.
Taylor got off to a slow start in 2005 at Nebraska, with 39 of 89 passes for 399 yards, with a touchdown and three interceptions in his first three games. Taylor had a great game against Iowa State on Thursday, to finish with 431 yards on 36 of 55 passing with two touchdowns. At the time, the 36 completions were also a school record. For the first time in 37 years, he would fail again against Kansas, throwing for only 117 yards against Kansas. He will have up-and-coming performances throughout the season, culminating in a 30–3 victory over Colorado where he threw 392 yards and a come-from-behind 32–28 victory over the Michigan Wolverines in the Alamo Bowl, in which he threw a Nebraska bowl record 3 touchdown passes. Taylor set a new school record for passing yards in a season with 2,653 yards on 51% of his passes being complete.
Taylor made a big leap over his season-opener last year by going 22 of 33 attempts for 287 yards with three touchdowns and one interception in his 2006 opener against Louisiana Tech. Taylor continued his fine pass accuracy against Nicholls State, finishing 19 of 23 for 202 yards and a new career-best in four touchdown passes.
With a appearance in the 2006 Big 12 Championship Game against the Oklahoma Sooners, Taylor led the Nebraska Cornhuskers to a record of 9–3. During the regular season, Taylor played for 2,789 yards and 24 touchdowns and was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year.
Playing career
In the 2007 NFL Draft, Taylor was undrafted. He had been signed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but he was recalled by Taylor as he was packing to leave for training camp. Taylor moved to Canada and joined the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the CFL, then in the CFL. He spent the season on the team's service staff but did not return for the 2008 season. The Grey Bombers lost their 95th Grey Cup of the season on Sunday.
Coaching career
Taylor, a graduate assistant and then tight ends coach at Texas A&M, spent four years under head coach Mike Sherman, his mentor and father-in-law.
Taylor was named assistant quarterbacks coach for the Miami Dolphins on January 30, 2012. After the dismissal of Bill Lazor, the previous offensive coordinator, was promoted to the team's interim offensive coordinator, on November 30, 2015. The Dolphins went 2–3 and averaged 17 points per game during five games under Lazor's tenure as offensive coordinator, a marginal decrease from their per-game average under Lazor, though Interim Coach Dan Campbell had encouraging things to say about Taylor's results.
Taylor was hired by University of Cincinnati Bearcats head coach Tommy Tuberville in January 2016 to be the Bearcats' offensive coordinator. Taylor, Jim Turner, the Dolphins' offensive line coach, was the one who connected him with Tuberville, according to Taylor. Taylor was regarded as a "rising star in the coaching ranks" by the Bearcats, as a result of his NFL service and his work as a mentor to Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill. Tannehill was only the second Miami quarterback with multiple 3,000 yards, as well as the third-most passing yards for a quarterback in his first four seasons in NFL history under Taylor's coaching.
Taylor was recruited by Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay as an assistant wide receivers coach in 2017. In 2018, he was promoted to quarterbacks coach. Taylor led quarterback Jared Goff to the NFC Championship and a role in Super Bowl LIII on February 3, 2019.
The Cincinnati Bengals recruited Taylor as head coach on February 4, 2019. He lost his first game to the Seattle Seahawks by a score of 21-20. The Bengals lost their next ten games, ending with a 0–11 record, the lowest start to a season in franchise history. Andy Dalton, the Baltimore Ravens' starting quarterback, was suspended ahead of his Week 10 match against the Baltimore Ravens. Ryan Finley began the next three weeks, but Dalton was renamed the starter against the New York Jets after being ineffective. Taylor won his first game as the Bengals' coach by defeating the Jets 22–6, snaping a franchise-record thirteen-game losing streak dating back to the previous season. In Taylor's first head-to-head match against the division rivals by a score of 27–19, the Bengals lost to the Cleveland Browns in their first head-to-head matchup against the Cleveland Browns in a week of head-to-head action. After a Week 16, 38-35 loss to the Miami Dolphins in overtime, the 1–14 Bengals secured the first overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Following a 33–23 win over the Browns in Week 17, Taylor and the Bengals ended the season 2–14, beating a franchise-worst record set in 2002.
Taylor started the season with first-overall pick Joe Burrow as the team's starting quarterback. Andy Dalton was not on the roster for the first time since 2010's Bengals season, and the Dallas Cowboys' Adam Dalton was not on the roster at all. The Bengals lost their first game of the season to the Los Angeles Chargers by a score of 16–13 on September 13, 2020. In a week four 33–25 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars, Taylor and the Bengals won their first game of the season. Taylor called an offensive drive and field goal in the final seconds to stop a shut down in Taylor's road record with the Bengals to 0–11–1. Taylor and the Cleveland Browns had a 34–31 lead against the Cleveland Browns with a minute left but lost by 37–34 after a touchdown play by the Browns. Despite having a lead during the fourth quarter, the Bengals lost a game for the fifth time this season. The Bengals won by 31–20 over the Tennessee Titans the following week, but not by a score of 31–20.
Burrow sustained a season-ending leg injury in a Week 11 match against the Washington Football Team. Taylor and the Bengals went on to lose 20–9. Finley was playing the rest of the game. The Bengals' next match against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday night will be a Week 15 Night Football matchup. The Bengals defeated the Steelers 27-17, with Finley at quarterback. Following Burrow's injury, Finley's first start of the season was also on sale. With Allen as quarterback, the Bengals went on to win the Houston Texans the next week. It was Taylor's first road victory of his tenure with the Bengals (the team's first since 2018) and also the first winning streak of Taylor's head coaching career. The Bengals posted a 4–11–1 record in their third straight season, and the Bengals finished fourth and last in the AFC North for the third straight season. Taylor will return as head coach for the 2021 season on the following day, according to Bengals owner Mike Brown.
Taylor started his third season with a healthy Joe Burrow under center, having recovered from his leg injury this year. In Week 1, the Bengals defeated the Minnesota Vikings by a field goal by rookie kicker Evan McPherson. Taylor and his Bengals scored a game-tying touchdown against the 3–1 Green Bay Packers at home in Week 5 on Sunday. Mason Crosby of the Packers failed three field goals in a 4-minute span, including a go-ahead 36-yarder with 2:12 to play, a 51-yard game-winner as time expired, and a 40-yard game-winner as Burrow threw an interception on the first play of overtime. Unfortunately, McPherson missed two attempts, including a 57-yarder with 0:26 to play in regulation, and a 49-yarder in overtime after Crosby's third missed field day. The Packers slowed down the field for one last time, and Crosby scored on a 49-yard foul with 1:55 remaining in overtime, bringing the Bengals to 3–2. The Bengals defeated the Ravens 41–21 in Week 16 of their first beating season since 2015. Taylor was instrumental in the Bengals' first AFC North division championship since 2015 after beating the Kansas City Chiefs last week. After beating the Las Vegas Reds 26–19 in the Wild Card Round, Taylor led the Bengals to their first playoff victory since the 1990 season. The Bengals defeated the Tennessee Titans 19-16 for their first road playoff victory in franchise history and their first AFC Championship Game since 1988. The Bengals won their first Super Bowl since Super Bowl XXIII in overtime, defeating the Kansas City Chiefs 27–24 in overtime. The Bengals lost 23-20 to the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LVI. Taylor signed a deal extension through 2026 following the season's conclusion. Although the specifics weren't revealed before the re-launch, Taylor's $3.5 million annual salary was the lowest among the 32 head coaches in the NFL.
