Yolanda Adams Career

Musical career

Adams first attracted the interest of Thomas Whitfield and Sound of Gospel Records as a lead singer with Houston's Southeast Inspirational Choir, which is under the direction of Carl Preacher, Brenda Waters, and Shirley Joiner. In 1982, the choir recorded the single "For My Liberty" as the featured vocalist. Adams appeared on the Edwin Hawkins Music and Arts Seminar Choir's "Give Us Peace" in 1986. Later, she signed a Sound of Gospel recording deal that resulted in her first album, Just As I Am in 1987. Through The Storm, producer/keyboardist Ben Tankard discovered her in 1990 and announced himself as his own label Tribute Records and his band Through The Storm. During this period, Tankard's goal with Tribute Records was to attract an audience for a smoother gospel/jazz sound. On his 1994 release Play Me in Your Key, Adams' vocals were included on his album and concept video single "You Bring Out the Best in Me." The collaboration received a warm response from gospel, jazz, and "quiet storm" styles.

Adams was followed by Save the World, which featured her first hit song, "The Battle Is The Lord's." More Than a Melody, which released more Tankard's production work with contributions from O'Landa Draper and BeBe Winans, was her next release. The single "Gotta Have Love," which featured Tony Terry on background vocals, gained mainstream attention and became her first single and music video. Yolanda... Live in Washington, a series of songs from her first three albums, which came out the following year. At first, the video from this collection was released as a series of two videos on VHS, then as a single set on DVD and CD. During this time, Tribute Records' parent company, Diadem Music Group, merged with Benson Music Group, which was later purchased by New York-based Zomba/Verity Records.

"Only Believe" was Verity Records' final release, as well as "Only Believe," which was a hit on contemporary radio, was one of Songs from the Heart. "Still I Rise," a tribute to Rosa Parks that was inspired by the Maya Angelou poem of the same name, was also included on the album.

On Elektra Records, Adams' first significant attention outside of the urban urban contemporary gospel arena came with the introduction of Mountain High... Valley Low in 1999. Several mainstream musicians and producers supported this album, including Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis (Janet Jackson, Boyz II Men), James "Big Jim" Wright (Mariah Carey, Nicole C. Mullen), Warryn Campbell (Mary Mary, Brandy), and Keith Thomas (BeBe & CeCe Winans). The album debuted at number 2 in 2000 and received a Grammy Award for Adams. "Yeah," "Fragile Heart," and "Open My Heart are among the album's best singles. "Fragile Heart" was dedicated to the memory of Adams' long-serving road manager, who died in 1998.

Adams' Christmas album was released in 2000, and she released a live album in 2001 (The Experience). Adams received his second Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album as a result of his experience. According to the RIAA, Believe, which featured the hit "Never Give Up," was released in 2001 and attained gold status. During President George W. Bush's tenure, she would perform this song on "The Salute to Gospel Music" at the White House later in the decade. In 2001, Adams released The Divas of Gospel, a compilation CD containing legendary Grammy Award winner Albertina Walker, who was widely referred to as the "Queen of Gospel Music" until her death in 2010.

"I Believe," Adams' 2003 film Honey, which appeared during the final dance's last scene, was a song.

Adams served as a juror for the 2nd annual Independent Music Awards to promote independent artists' careers. She has also been dubbed the Queen of Contemporary Gospel Music by the BBC.

Adams returned in 2005 with Day By Day, after nearly four years without releasing an album. Despite being higher than Mountain High...Valley Low on the Billboard 100 and Billboard R&B Albums chart, it did not receive RIAA approval. "Be Blessed," "Someone Watching Over You," "This Too Shall Pass" and "Victory" were among the album's singles (which was prominently featured in the film The Gospel).

Atlantic Records' long-time friend The Best of Me was released in May 2007.

In 2007, Adams signed with Columbia Records. In October 2007, Columbia unveiled What a Wonderful Time, her second holiday collection. The lead single, "Hold On," was announced as the lead single.

Adams started with What a Wonderful Time, which aired in over 26 radio markets in less than two years. Marcus D. Wiley was named Bishop Secular on her radio show Marcus D. Wiley. The syndicated show aired for ten years before its retirement in 2016. In September 2019, it was relaunched from KTSU-FM 90.9, a Texas Southern University program.

Adams performed "Already Alright" from her 1999 Mountain High...Valley Low album on December 25, 2009. Mo'Nique said that the song is one of her favorites.

Adams' book "Points of Power," based on one of the segments of her radio show Points of Power, appeared in 2010.

Becoming, Adams' eleventh studio album, was released on May 3, 2011, and was produced by Steve Bracey. On Tuesday, April 19th, Drathoven's latest single, "Be Still," premiered on The Yolanda Adams Morning Show. Becoming was not announced by Walmart as an exclusive offer. Adams' received the Best Gospel Artist Award for the fourth time in her career, after winning the most since the 2001 BET Awards.

Adams revealed she was working on her twelfth studio album on BET's Lift Every Voice in April 2013. The album's name and release date have yet to be announced, but she has revealed that she will have songwriting and producing credits from the likes of super gospel producers Donald Lawrence, Israel Houghton, and Kirk Franklin.
