Club career
Yang, a Beijing native, began his professional football career with Beijing Guoan. During his time with them, he gradually became comfortable, but it was only after he had a short loan period with lower league German Waldhof Mannheim in 1998 that he demonstrated his potential as a forward. Eintracht Frankfurt was interested in him and was able to make a DEM1 million trade for his services. Since being the first Chinese footballer to play in the Bundesliga, he will flourish in the league and score eight goals to help the team prevent relegation to zero. Bundesliga is a German language. Yang Chen will continue to be known as a trailblazer for Chinese footballers for his ability to score in one of the five top European football leagues, and he will continue to win the Chinese Footballer of the Year in 2000. Although his time with Frankfurt was seen as a success during the 2000-2001 season, Yang Chen did not gain favor in the team and would have to fight back for his position before deciding to transfer to 2. In preparations for the FIFA World Cup, Bundesliga side FC St. Pauli will guarantee his place in the Chinese football team.
Yang Chen returned to his home country to compete for Shenzhen Jianlibao, where under new Yahu's guidance, his career will flourish once more, and he will continue to win the 2004 Chinese Super League title. As Zhu Guanghu was left to head the Chinese national team, Chi Shangbin was brought in to replace Yang Chen, but several other players immediately expressed their disliking of him. Several allegations regarding the players and the administration have surfaced during the 2005 league season. If the club wants to let the operation go, several players, including Yang Chen, were sold off. He would continue to play with the Xiamen Blue Lions until they disbanded in 2007 and he decided to retire.
