Wilson Bentley Life

Wilson "Snowflake" Bentley (1865-1921) was one of the first documented snowflakes photographers.

He invented a method of capturing flakes on black velvet in such a way that their photos could be captured before they were either melted or sublimated. Kenneth G. Libbrecht explains that the techniques used by Bentley to photograph snowflakes are virtually the same as those used today, and that although the photographer's photographs depict the technical limitations of the time, "he did it so well that hardly anyone bothered to photograph snowflakes for almost 100 years."

Bentley's photographs are on display in his hometown, Jericho, Vermont, at the Jericho Historical Society. Bentley contributed a set of original glass-plate photomicrographs of snow crystals to the Buffalo Museum of Science.

A portion of the collection has been digitalized and arranged into a digital library.
