William "Billy" Woodward Jr. (June 12, 1920 – October 31, 1955) was the heir to the Hanover National Bank fortune (later Manufacturer's Hanover), the Belair Estate and stud farm, and a prominent figure in racing circles before being shot to death by Ann Woodward in what Life magazine referred to as the "Shooting of the Century).
Personal life
Woodward was greeted by Ann Eden Crowell, a Powers model and stage and radio actress who also performed in upscale Manhattan nightclubs, during his naval service. Ann was first thought to be Woodward Sr.'s mistress, and he handed her over to his son. Woodward Sr. did not actually set his son up with Ann, much to his wife Elsie's surprise that Ann was a gold digger. Early years and career
Billy Woodward was William Woodward Sr. and his partner, Elizabeth Ogden "Elsie" Cryder, and his mother, Elizabeth Ogden "Elsie" Cryder. His mother was one of the "Cryder triplets" of New York City social history. During the reign of Edward VII, his father was president and director of the Hanover Bank of New York, and he was ambassador to the Court of St. James'. Woodward Sr. used to run on the race track with the king, and the two became close friends.
Woodward attended Buckley School and Groton School and graduated from Harvard University. After graduating, he served in the United States Navy during WWII. After a torpedo attack on his ship, the USS Liscome Bay, he was given a Purple Heart. Woodward became the manager of Hanover Bank after leaving the Navy. He was once considered by some to be America's most eligible bachelor and then became one of the country's top horse breeders. Woodward inherited Belair Mansion and Stud farm in Collington, Maryland, the oldest in America, as well as the thoroughbred horse Nashua.
