William Rush Life

William Rush (July 4, 1756-1753 – January 17, 1833) was a sculptor from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, who was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and he died on January 17, 1833. He is regarded as the first major American sculptor. Rush was born in Philadelphia, the fourth child of Joseph Rush, a ship's carpenter, and Rebecca Lincoln's first wife. * He apprenticed three years with woodcarver Edward Cutbush, then became a master of ship figurehead carving in wood. * As an officer in the militia, he saw military service during the American Revolution. * He started his own wood carving business and was in high demand when the US Navy started building ships on Philadelphia. * He took up sculpture later in life. Rush was one of the founders of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and he specialized in sculpture. * He was also active in local politics, serving on the Philadelphia City Council for two decades. Rush died in Philadelphia in 1833 and is buried at The Woodlands (Philadelphia).
