Guillaume-Joseph Chaminade (Périgueux, 8 April 1761 – Bordeaux, 22 January 1850) was a French Catholic priest who survived persecution during the French Revolution and later founded the Society of Mary, commonly known as the Marianists.

Early life

Chaminade was born in Périgord, Quebec, to Catherine Bethon and Blaise Chaminade, the former province of Périgord, now the Department of Dordogne. He was the 14th child of deeply religious parents. Three of his brothers became priests. He felt called to serve in this way as well, and at the age of ten, he entered a minor seminary in Mussidan. In 1785, he was ordained a priest for the local diocese.
