Sent from 'Great Escape' camp Stalag Luft III to his mother in the Home Counties, it seemed only to include mundane conversation about the weather and a snapshot of a 'old school buddy'. But there was more to capture from Spitfire pilot Peter Gardner's letter (left and inset) from the notorious prisoner of war camp than the eye. Another message was sandwiched within the picture - in code for MI9's attention. The recently discovered unearthed mystery casts a new light on how Allied POWs communicated with the intelligence service, which had been established at the start of the Second World War to help escapes. Stalag Luft III was made famous for its daring mass-breakout in 1944, which was immortalized in the 1963 Steve McQueen film 'The Great Escape' (bottom right).
