He was the creator and host of The Magic of Oil Painting (1974-82) television series that aired on PBS in the United States.

Career

Alexander, who was apprenticed as a carriage maker, was drafted into the Wehrmacht during World War II. He created portraits of Allied officers' wives and then escaped to the United States, captured by Allied forces.

Alexander became a refugee and became a master painter after World War II. He invented the modern "quick" version of the 15th century wet-on-wet technique and migrated to North America.

Bill Alexander, a later in life, began hosting television shows focusing on painting education and his techniques. He is best known for his television show The Magic of Oil Painting, which aired on PBS in the United States from 1974 to 1982. He collaborated with other artists on several different PBS series of the format The Art of Bill Alexander and... from 1984 to 1992. These artists were introduced to Lowell Speers and included Robert Warren, Sharon Perkins, and Diane André. Alexander and the second featured artist will alternate episodes, with both painters using the wet-on-wet technique. "as seen on television," the book was turned into a series of books.
