Personal life
Van Hanegem was known for his ferocious, passionate matches against German teams (before the 1974 final, he begged the Dutch side to "stuff the Germans"). "I don't like Germans." "I had a headache every time I played against German players because of the war."
The German 15th army was moving northward from Calais to the Netherlands in the summer of 1944. The Wehrmacht was bombed by the Allies near the ferry terminal at Breskens on September 11th. Residents had left the area, but Willem's father and older brother, Lo and Izaak van Hanegem, returned to get supplies. They were found in a shelter, which was also struck. Both died. Van Hanegem lost a brother and a sister to the war later in life. "I didn't give a damn as long as we humiliated them." He was summing up after the 1974 final. My father, sister, and two brothers were murdered by the police. I am full of anxiety. They are "obnoxious" to me. Van Hanegem was left shedding tears after the game (with Germany winning 2–1).
Van Hanegem's later years, on the contrary, took a more conciliatory tone when expressing war rumors.
