Wilhelm Maybach Life

Typical of the late 19th century, Wilhelm Maybach and Gottlieb Daimler developed light, fast internal combustion engines suitable for land, water, and air use. These were fitted to the world's first motorcycle, motorboat, and following Daimler's death, a new Mercedes model was introduced in late 1902, designed to Emil Jellinek's specifications.

Maybach rose to become the technical director of the Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft (DMG), but it was not able to get along with its chairmen. Maybach and his son Karl found Maybach-Motorenbau GmbH in 1907, which made Zeppelin engines. The company began producing large luxury cars, branded "Maybach" after the 1919 Versailles Treaty was signed. He died in 1929 and his son Karl Maybach succeeded him. Maybach-Motorenbau engineered and produced virtually all of the engines used in German tanks and half-tracks during World War II, including those for the Panther, Tiger I and Tiger II heavy tanks, starting around 1936.

Maybach Motorenbau, a subsidiary of Luftschiffbau Zeppelin, continued after the war, making diesel engines. Maybach came under Daimler-Benz's custody in the 1960s and was renamed MTU Friedrichshafen.

In 2002, the Maybach brand name was revived for a luxurious make, but it was not popular. Daimler-Benz announced on November 25, 2011, that they would no longer make automobiles under the Maybach brand name in 2013. Daimler also announced the manufacturing of an ultra-luxury version of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class in 2014 under the Daimler brand.

Wilhelm Maybach Career

(1846 to 1869) - Aerial life and work (1946 to 1869)

Wilhelm Maybach was born in Heilbronn, Baden-Württemberg, in 1846, the son of a carpenter and his wife Luise. He had four brothers. When he was eight years old, the family moved from Löwenstein near Heilbronn to Stuttgart. His mother died in 1856 and his father in 1859.

A philanthropic institution in Reutlingen admitted him as a student after his relatives revealed it in the Stuttgarter Anzeiger newspaper. Gustav Werner, Maybach's founder and director, discovered the school's engineering workshop, which helped to spark his career. Maybach, who was 15 years old (1861), wanted to work in Industrial design and took extra classes in physics and mathematics at Reutlingen's public high school.

He was a licensed designer on stationary engines by the time he was 19 years old. Gottlieb Daimler, his workshop boss, who died when he was 29 years old, heard his efforts and hired him as his main assistant, a position he held until Daimler's death in 1900.
