Five year-old Maryland boy dies from the FLU after infection sparked deadly sepsis

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 27, 2024
A Maryland mother who lost her son to sepsis is now fighting for increased protocols in hospitals, as the disease kills one American every 90 seconds. Lochlin DeSantis was just five years old in January 2020 when he came down with the flu. The flu virus and strep throat were running rampant in their area, and Lochlin's mother, Brooke DeSantis, a nurse, had been fighting with his school and pediatrician's office to get her children a flu vaccine. However, children had to be at least nine years old, and all of Mrs DeSantis' children were underage. On Friday, January 17, Lochlin came home from school complaining of leg cramps and a headache. As the weekend persisted, he acquired a slight fever and body aches, and by Sunday, he couldn't bear weight on his legs. Urgent care doctors told Mrs DeSantis to take Lochlin home and bring him to the hospital the next day if he got worse. On Monday, the little boy with an 'old soul' who would give food to the homeless and longed to volunteer with charities, took a turn for the worse.

Civil rights groups call for collapsed Baltimore bridge to be renamed when it's rebuilt because legacy of national anthem author Francis Scott Key is 'clouded with racism accusations'

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 9, 2024
The Caucus of African American Leaders of Anne Arundel County in Maryland voted unanimously to call for the renaming and will lobby governor Wes Moore on the proposal, as reported by the Baltimore Banner . The caucus includes civil rights groups such as the NAACP and the National Coalition of 100 Black Women. Leaders argued that the The Star-Spangled Banner author was a slave owner who wrote lyrics that scholars have said 'demeaned black people.' They have asked for the bridge to be renamed after late congressman Parren J Mitchel, the first black man from Maryland elected to the US House of Representatives Democratic gov Moore told Fox News he remains 'laser-focused on providing closure to these families, clearing the channel, and rebuilding the bridge.' However, the Baltimore Banner reported that on Monday Moore told reporters there will 'be a time for that' conversation at a later date. While as a lawyer Key helped many black Marylanders obtain their freedom before emancipation, he opposed the idea of free black citizens in the US, and fought to send black Americans to Liberia, the Banner reported. Key is also often quoted as claiming that black Americans are 'a distinct and inferior race of people, which all experience proves to be the greatest evil that afflicts a community.' However,  the Star Spangled Banner Foundation has claimed the racist quote is 'Incorrectly credited to Key as a first-person expression of his attitudes about race in the United States.'

Containers are being pulled from a stranded Dali container ship that crashed into Baltimore's Key Bridge, causing the ship's demise, but the 22-man crew is STILL on board

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 8, 2024
Since being slammed into the bridge on March 26, the Dali has been trapped under mangled steel in the Patapsco River, killing six workers. The vessel's crew is still on board nearly two weeks after the incident, with it unknown when they will be able to disembark the ship, which had only been on board for about two weeks when it lost electricity and crashed. According to a statement issued by the Key Bridge Response Unified Command, the containers' removal from the deck of the Dali is expected to continue this week as weather permits. It's a major step toward the reopening of one of the country's main shipping lanes, and crews are progressing toward removing sections of the bridge that lay across the ship's bow, allowing it to move.

Officials predict that tangled rubble would make clearing the task more difficult than expected. Collapsed Baltimore bridge chunks appear on stunning 3D underwater photographs of the riverbed

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 2, 2024
On Monday evening, the Naval Sea System Command of the United States Navy (NAVSEA) released four 3D photographs as crews continue to demolish steel and concrete to clear and reopen the channel. According to NAVSEA officials, the tangled mess of metal would make the clearing mission more difficult than anticipated. These 3D photos depict the full extent of the forthcoming and difficult rescue mission,' NAVSEA said in a tweet.' On March 26, the Dali freight ship lost electricity and control and crashed into the bridge while eight construction workers were filling potholes on the structure.

The crew on the Dali container ship in Baltimore harbor is STILL marooned, a week after the Frances Scott Key Bridge sank without a single plan for them to disembark, but they do now have Wi-Fi

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 2, 2024
Despite US officials being able to get aboard and off the ferry, the crew on the Dali are being encouraged to stay on the sinket ship, and there are no plans to disembark them any time soon. According to the US Coast Guard, the bulk of the Dali's crew are from India, with India announcing that 20 of them are from the region, and one from Sri Lanka. Little else is known about the employees. As the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) continues its inquiry into the accident, which has so far killed six people, no one of them has been allowed to disembark. According to Chirag Bahri, the international operations manager of the UK-based International Seafarers' Welfare and Assistance Network, it could be months before the sailors are allowed to return home.

The cost of the boat that crashed into the Baltimore Key Bridge, which caused deadly fire, has been reduced to $43.6 million, according to Dali owners

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 2, 2024
In federal court, the owner and manager of the Dali freight ship that crashed into Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge filed a lawsuit protesting their legal responsibility and seeking to limit damages to the ship's cost. The ship's value was no more than $90 million before the deadly voyage, according to the companies. The repair costs are expected to be at least $28 million, the restoration costs will be at least $19.5 million, and freight costs are estimated at $1.17 million. A federal court in Maryland will eventually determine who is to blame for the crash and how much money they owe. Following last week's demise, Baltimore officials reported that they would build two temporary alternate channels for commercially important vessels.

Officials from the University of Oregon have announced that the women's March Madness court in Portland has two different distances for the 3-point lines on either side — with Texas and NC State playing through the difference this afternoon

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 1, 2024
When it came to distance on the 3-point line, NC State and Texas decided to compete in a court in Portland, a significant difference. It wasn't until Texas coach Vic Schaefer and North Carolina State coach Wes Moore met with officials during pregame warmups to discuss the situation, with the tape measure being broken out to determine the cause. The two teams decided to play with the unusual 3-point lines in place, a game that the No. fought in on ESPN. The 3 seed Wolfpack advanced to the Final Four after defeating top-seeded Texas 76-66.

Gov. John Kerry of Maryland has resigned from his role as Maryland governor. Wes Moore dismisses DEI's allegations as 'foolishness' for Baltimore's demise

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 31, 2024
Democrats in Maryland are chastising Republicans who blame diversity, equity, and representation (DEI) policies for the Francis Scott Key Bridge's demise. Gov. John Kerry on Saturday: Wes Moore, 45, said he had "no time" to respond to those who claim that DEI somehow caused the ship to crash into a vital building support and destroy a substantial portion of the 1.6-mile bridge on March 26. In the meantime, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said on Sunday that there is still no estimate on the timeframe for restoring the critical bridge after its tragic demise.

In midst of widespread chemical leaks, a shocking new video from a ship that sank Baltimore's Baltimore bridge shows the severity of the fire on board, as $60 million cleanup efforts begin with the delivery of the East Coast's biggest crane

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 29, 2024
As the first video of the crash emerged from on board the vessel that caused the disaster, the largest crane in the eastern United States arrived in Baltimore today for the multimillion dollar clean-up of the Francis Key Bridge fire in Baltimore. The towering crane is critical to the precise task of removing the massive pieces of rubble from around the Dali container ship so it can be moved as the waterway is reopened. Footage from the ship, which was published on Thursday night by inspectors from the National Transportation Safety Bureau, revealed the severity of the ship's damage. A significant portion of the ship's bow broke into the ship's bow, resulting in a difficult region of twisted and jagged metal. Many of the containers were destroyed, but other rubble, including concrete and barrels, was scattered across portions of the deck. Four others who were on the bridge during the fire are now missing, but four others are also missing.

Containers were LEAKING into Baltimore harbor from a stricken vessel, as the NTSB reports that containers were 'delivered' in the bridge disaster

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 28, 2024
Jennifer Homendy, the National Transportation Safety Board Chair, reported on Wednesday that her team had discovered 56 containers of hazardous cargo aboard the Singaporean container ship. A senior hazmat investigator with the company discovered that 764 tons of hazardous materials, mainly corrosives, flammables, and some miscellaneous hazardous substances, class nine hazardous products, which might include lithium ion batteries, could leak into the water surrounding the downed bridge. Homendy said that some of the containers had been 'infringed,' and that the hazardous stuff could be seen on the waterway.

In a similar situation to the Baltimore bridge tragedy, Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 28, 2024
Just weeks before a similar situation in the United States resulted in the deadly Baltimore bridge disaster, a cruise ship suffered a blackout in Sydney Harbour. On February 28, the MS Borealis, a 238-meter cruise liner, sailed out from Sydney's White Bay Cruise Terminal in Rozelle. As it negotiated the western channel near South Head around 11 p.m., the ship lost power about 50 minutes after passing underneath the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

1.26AM: Bridge workers get the mayday over their radios and begin to close the road immediately. There is no time to warn the building workers. 1.27 AM: A plume of thick black smoke billows from the top of the Dali as it approaches the bridge. Giorgio Comninos has awakened in his bed at 1.30 a.m. He lives in the immediate area and hears a deafening rumble. The sounds, according to him, are either an earthquake or low-flying military aircraft.

According to a port worker, the Dali cargo ship had a "severe electrical problem" while docked in Baltimore days before the bridge collapse crash that saw the ship suffer 'total power failure and loss of engine control.'

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 27, 2024
According to a port employee, the Dali container ship that smashed into the Key Bridge had a "severe electrical breakdown" when docked in Baltimore days before. According to Julie Mitchell, co-administrator of Container Royalty, a ship that monitors cargo, the ship was anchored at the port for two days before.

When port traffic screeches to a halt at a cost of $15 million per day, Baltimore's Key Bridge collapse caused chaos on the supply chain

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 27, 2024
The Port of Baltimore is suspended indefinitely until the 1.6-mile Francis Scott Key Bridge, which may take two months, is cleared from the Patapsco River. At least a dozen large ships were stranded in the Chesapeake Bay, waiting for confirmation of which port they should be rerouted to, according to photographs. According to the Maryland Government, the port earns $2.6 billion in gross income, $3.3 billion in wages, and almost $400 million in taxes per year. Experts predicted that more than $30 million in local economic activity would be lost if the port remains closed for every day. Last year, Baltimore handled 52.3 million tons of foreign cargo worth $80.8 billion, ranked ninth in the United States for both metrics and records for the port.

The 'prophet' of Christian 'prophet' tells a TV show that he had a dream about the Baltimore bridge before the tragedy

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 27, 2024
On Tuesday, Dutch Sheets discussed the Dali's crash into the Francis Scott Key Bridge, something he had heard about the week before in a divine dream, according to him. Following the incident, six construction workers who were repairing potholes on the bridge at the time are now missing and presumed dead. Sheets shared during a 'Flashpoint' show that he had a nightmare involving the bridge that was a 'warning.'

Investigators say the Dali pilot screamed to abandon anchor and pull the ship's rudder before crashing into Baltimore's Key Bridge, but was unable to divert it

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 27, 2024
According to Clay Diamond, executive director of the American Pilots Association, the pilot quickly gave out a series of orders to try to prevent the disaster. These included dropping the anchor and attempting to steer the ship around, as well as ordering the dispatch office to shut down traffic to the bridge. The ship's extreme size and closeness to the bridge gave there no hope of preventing the catastrophic collision near the bridge.

Terrifying moments before the bridge was revealed, with lucky drivers seeing it through seconds before impact: After making a mayday call, the Frantic pilot ordered the boat to be turned around in an unsuccessful attempt to avoid the building

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 27, 2024
According to one industry official in the minutes before collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge, the 948ft Dali, a Singaporean-flagged container ship, had a complete blackout. The cause of the accident was unclear, according to Clay Diamond, executive director of the American Pilots Association, although backup generators had arrived. Despite this, the propulsion system remained offline, and the pilot in command ordered the ship to be turned around and for the port anchor to be dropped to slow the ship.

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 27, 2024
Officials said the dangerous weather, which included freezing temperatures and intense bridge shrapnel, was jeopardizing their lives, so diverts were brought back late Tuesday night. Six construction workers who were on the bridge at the time of the fire are missing, and Coast Guard officials say they are presumed dead. Col. Roland Butler of the Marland Police said the dive teams face 'changing currents, low temperatures, poor visibility, and so many metal and unknown objects in the water at a press conference on Tuesday ending the search.'

When Baltimore's Key Bridge collapsed, the construction crew may have been on break and in their trucks, according to a colleague. Miguel Luna, 49, 49, and Maynor Suazo, 37, were among the first two workers who were believed to have died

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 27, 2024
The six construction crew members were thrown into the frigid waters of the Patapsco River when a container ship collided with the bridge they were on, and were on their break when it occurred. Miguel Luna, 49, a native of El Salvador and Maynor Suazo, 37, a native of Honduras, was on the graveyard shift with the remainder of their Hispanic crew when the Dali ship lost propulsion and caused the demise of Baltimore's iconic Francis Scott Key Bridge. Luna spent 19 years in the United States, Suazo for 18 years. Both of them are fathers.
