Wendy Joy Schaal (born July 2, 1954) is an American actress best known for her appearances in Joe Dante films such as Innerspace, The 'Burbs, and Small Soldiers.

Since 2005, she has mostly worked in cartoon voice acting, most notably as Francine Smith in the animated film American Dad!

Early years

Schaal was born in Chicago, Illinois, and the niece of Lois Schaal (née Treacy) and actor Richard Schaal was born. Valerie Harper's former stepdaughter is her name. Schaal lived with her parents in Crete, Illinois, until she was five years old, when she and her mother moved to Newport Beach, California, after her parents divorced. Schaal began acting with Viola Spolin in Chicago when she was nine years old, later moving to Wisconsin and then California when she was 11. When she was 14 years old, a trip to New York with her father and Harper followed her to California when her father and stepmother decided to settle in Hollywood.

Schaal obtained an Associate of Arts degree from Los Angeles City College, where she specialized in set construction and acting. She began working on television after her father led an acting workshop.

Personal life

Schaal married Stephen M. Schwartz on September 4, 1977, but they divorced in October 1987. They have one son.

Schaal's early television appearances included roles on Fish, Little House on the Prairie, Phyllis, Rhoda, and Welcome Back, Kotter. In 1981, Schaal appeared on ABC's Fantasy Island as Julie, the niece of the program's central character, Mr. Roark. Bonnie Hornback in AfterMASH, Debbie Pepper in Good Grief, and Liz Dooley in Nearly Departed were among her other appearances on television. 747 Francine Smith is also a character in the animated film American Dad.
