Wei-yin Chen Career

Professional career

He was a pitcher for the Chunichi Dragons in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) from 2004 to 2011. At the end of the 2006 season, Chen had Tommy John surgery. His best season in Japan came in 2009 when he led the league with a 1.54 earned run average (ERA). FanGraphs characterized him as an extreme control pitcher with poor velocity when he came out of the Nippon League. Chunichi's deal with a provision enabled him to withdraw at age 26 after the 2011 season ended.

Chen signed as an international free agent with the Baltimore Orioles following the 2011 season. Chen was the first Taiwanese player to be signed by the Orioles. In Baltimore, he made his MLB debut against the New York Yankees on April 10, 2012. Chen weighed in 52 runs and left two earned runs out of six in a no-decision that the Orioles would later lose in extra innings in national television in native Taiwan. Chen made the team's 32 starts, totaling 12 wins and 11 losses and a ERA of 4.02 in 192.2 innings pitched. Chen was "the only constant in the (Orioles) rotation) rotation in 2012" and was consistent throughout the year. Chen placed fourth in the AL for Rookie of the Year award voting.

Chen took the number two spot in the Orioles' starting rotation after coming out of spring training. Chen set a target of throwing 200 innings on the season. Despite posting a 4.00 ERA, he failed in his first three starts and went 0–2 in his first three starts. Chen was placed on the disabled list on May 15, 2013, his first-ever stint with the Orioles, who suffered with an injury to his right oblique. Chen pitched seven innings against the Texas Rangers on July 10, 2013, striking out four out four and allowing three hits, gaining the victory. Chen was 7–7 on a 4.07 ERA in 23 starts in 2013. Chen underwent knee surgery to remove bone spurs during the 2013 off-season.

In a victory over the Seattle Mariners on August 1, 2014, Chen recorded a season-high of eight strikeouts. He dedicated the victory to the victims of the 2014 Kaohsiung gas explosions, which occurred just hours before in his hometown. Chen won his 15th game of the season against the Boston Red Sox on September 10, extending a flawless game to the sixth inning until Dan Butler's first big league appearance. Chen had a 16–6 record and a 3.54 ERA over 185+2/3 innings, his lowest finish in the season. Chen pitched 5+13 innings on 80 pitches on October 14 in a loss to the Kansas City Royals in game 3 of the 2014 ALCS. Chen was the first Taiwanese pitcher to start an ALCS game.

Chen made history by becoming the second Taiwanese-born player to start in the major leagues (after Chien-Ming Wang), throwing two runs and striking out five runs in a no decision against the Cleveland Indians on June 26, 2015. Chen despite only having a 4–5 record at the break, he went to a 2.78 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP in 110 innings over the first half of the season. Chen had an 11-08 record and a career-best 3.34 ERA over 191+13 innings pitched.

Chen agreed to a five-year deal with the Miami Marlins worth US$80 million on January 13, 2016. Chen was named the starting pitcher on the first day of the 2016 season, becoming the second Taiwanese pitcher to start on opening day since Chien-Ming Wang in 2008. Chen was confirmed as the cover star for MLB The Show 17 in Taiwanese on January 25, 2017. Chen was 5–5 in 22 starts in his first season as a Marlin, after being on the disabled list due to a back injury. In 123 innings, he had his worst ERA of his career, finishing at 4.96 in 123 runs.

Chen's first major league hit, an infield single off New York Mets starting Pitcher Zack Wheeler, on April 8. Due to a partial UCL tear, he was put on the disabled list after 5 starts. On September 4, he was activated from the disabled list and will pitch out of the bullpen.

Chen got the ball off the field on April 28 vs. the Rockies after going almost a year without a big league win, pitching 5-1 b batting, 2 walks, and three strikeouts in his first appearance. Chen scored his first major league double off the Atlanta Braves' Starting Pitcher Julio Teherán on July 24.

On November 20, 2019, Chen was selected for service. On November 27, he was released and became a free agent.
