Now Keir Starmer strips portraits of Gladstone, Elizabeth I and Walter Raleigh from No10
www.dailymail.co.uk,
October 13, 2024
The paintings of the former PM, monarch and explorer appear to have been shifted as Keir Starmer (left) puts his own stamp on Downing Street. Aides have stayed tight-lipped about the reasons for shifting images in the building. However, there have long been attacks on Gladstone (inset left) over his family's involvement in slavery - with calls for statues to be removed and civic buildings renamed. Elizabeth I is regarded as an early champion of the trade, while Raleigh was an early colonialist - and also reputed to have brought tobacco to England for the first time. The changes in No10 can be seen in photos of Sir Keir's recent meetings compared to when Rishi Sunak was in office (right).
Laura Trevelyan, a BBC News anchor, has left the company to campaign for more Caribbean reparations

Laura Trevelyan, 54, reported in February that her family would donate £100,000 to help Grenada's community projects to make up for their slave slave ownerships on the island. Ms Trevelyan confirmed that she will leave the BBC to become a 'roving advocate' for reparative justice. She said she would participate in campaigns seeking to obtain apologies and financial compensation from former colonial powers. The British journalist, who lives in the United States, has confirmed she will be working with Labour MP Clive Lewis, who has called on the Prime Minister to start talks with Caribbean leaders on paying reparations for Britain's role in slavery this month. Trevelyan, who appeared on Grenada: Confronting the Past for the final year, said that now was a good time to work. "The Coronation of the King and his remarks about being able to discuss slavery's past serve as an opening for a larger discussion,' she said. After slavery reparations, BBC's Laura Trevelyan is asked to discuss ancestor's place in Irish famine

Katherine Mezzacappa, an Irish author, applauded the announcement but wondered (inset) if she had 'any word' on her four-time grandfather, Sir Charles Trevelyan (right) - the English official in charge of famine relief after outbreaks of potato blight killed half a million people in the 1840s and 1850s. In The Fields of Athenry, the 1st baronet is commemorated, a remembrance of a man who'stole Trevelyans' corn, a reference to Irish food exported from Ireland when millions of people were starving. This weekend, the song was performed at the Six Nations. Laura Trevelyan is shown left.
