Edmund Lockyer Life

Edmund Lockyer (1701-1784 – 1860), a British soldier and explorer of Australia, was born in 1784. Lockyer, a shipmaker, and his wife Ann, née Grose, were born in Plymouth, Devon.

Lockyer began his army service as an ensign in the 19th Regiment in June 1803, was promoted lieutenant in early 1805 and made captain in August 1805.

Lockyer was promoted to major in August 1819 and transferred to the 57th Regiment in August 1824.

Lockyer landed at Sydney, the British Colony of New South Wales, in April 1825, with his wife and ten children; in August 1825, Lockyer was asked to lead an expedition into the upper reaches of the Brisbane River, which had only recently been mapped by Europeans.

Lockyer sailed from Sydney in the cutter Mermaid, settling in Brisbane on September 2nd.

He travelled up the river in a little boat after leaving the Mermaid in Brisbane.
