Wallace Hartley Career

Life and career

Hartley was born and raised in Colne, Lancashire, England. Albion Hartley, Hartley's father, was the choirmaster and Sunday school superintendent at Bethel Independent Methodist Chapel, where the family gathered on Burnley Road, where the family attended worship services. To the congregation, Albion himself preached the hymn "Nearer, My God," referring to Thee. Wallace attended Colne's Methodist day school, performed in Bethel's choir, and learned to play the violin from a fellow congregation member.

Hartley began working with the Craven & Union Bank in Colne after leaving school. Hartley performed in the Huddersfield Philharmonic Orchestra when his family relocated to Huddersfield. He left home to join the civic orchestra in Bridlington, where he spent six years. He migrated to Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, in 1909, becoming a musician on board RMS Lucania, RMS Lusitania, and RMS Maustania.

The employment of Cunard musicians was relocated to C.W. Music, while serving on the Maunard family. & F.N. - A.M. Black, a Black band, was on hand to supply musicians for Cunard and the White Star Line. Hartley's onboard status was changed by the transfer, as he no longer counted as a member of the crew but rather as a passenger, albeit one accommodated in second-class accommodation at the agency's expense. It later emerged that neither the shipping company nor the music agency had insured the musicians, with each claiming it was the other's responsibility.

Hartley was named as the bandmaster for the White Star Line ship RMS Titanic in April 1912. He was reluctant to say goodbye to Maria Robinson, his fiancée, whom he had recently suggested, but Hartley decided that being on the maiden voyage of the Titanic would bring him potential employers for future jobs.

Tone-deaf FTX millionaire spends $1.5M on gold watch recovered from wreck of Titanic as defrauded customers wait for money back

Patrick Gruhn triumphed in a fierce bidding war on Saturday to secure the gold pocket watch worn by John Jacob Astor IV on the doomed ship when it went down in April 1912. Gruhn was head of the company's European business when FTX collapsed in late 2022 after stealing $8 billion from investors. They have yet to see any of their money returned while Gruhn has agreed to pay just $33 million of the $323 million that FTX paid him for his business in what receivers have described as a 'massive overpayment'. 'The irony of this cannot be overstated,' tweeted finance writer Erin Arvendlund.
