Vince Ferragamo Career

Professional football career

Ferragamo (1977–1984), Buffalo Bills (1985), and Green Bay Packers (1985–1986) all participated in the National Football League (NFL).

Ferragamo sat on the bench in 1977 and 1978, behind Pat Haden (and 1977, an elderly Joe Namath). Haden broke a finger in mid-season, giving Ferragamo a chance. Ferragamo, the first quarterback to start a Super Bowl in Pasadena, started the 9-7 Rams to road victories over the Dallas Cowboys and Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC playoffs, making him the first quarterback to play in a Super Bowl in the same season for the first time in his career. After three quarters of play, the underdog Rams led the way before losing 31-19 to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Ferragamo's best statistical season in 1980, in which he threw for 30 touchdowns, tied for second most in the NFL. In the wild card game, the Rams made the playoffs once more, but Dallas defeated Dallas 34-13.

Ferragamo made the move to the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League in 1981, a large sum even by NFL standards, especially when compared to the Rams' $250,000 and 1980 compensation.) Ferragamo had a rough time adapting to Canadian football, scoring 175 of 342 yards (51.2%) for 2,175 yards, with only seven touchdown passes against 25 interceptions. After Ken Johnson arrived in a trade, he was demoted to backup to Gerry Dattilio in the second half of the season and then to third-string quarterback for the final three games. Montreal went through a difficult 3-13 season but the playoffs were still crowded due to a weak East Division. (Montreal lost the Eastern semi-finals to Ottawa, although Ferragamo watched from the pressbox.)

He appeared on the front page of Sports Illustrated twice in December 1980 and July 1981, in a span of fewer than eight months.

Ferragamo was back in 1982 as the back-up to Bert Jones, who was sidelined with a neck injury. Ferragamo threw for 509 yards in a home loss to the Chicago Bears on December 26, marking the second highest pass rate in a league game since former Ram Norm Van Brocklin in 1951. Ferragamo's results as of 2022 stand out as the 15th-best in NFL history.)

Ferragamo led the Rams back to the playoffs in 1983, right behind rookie Eric Dickerson's return to the leagues. The Rams were drubbed 51-6 by the defending Super Bowl champion Washington Redskins after beating the favored Cowboys in Irving in the wild card matchup, 24–17.

Ferragamo was back in 1984 as the Rams' starting quarterback. In an 18-14 loss to Pittsburgh on September 16, the Rams' quarterback lost his finger on his throwing hand. Ferragamo was drafted in 1985 by the Buffalo Bills, but they lost only one of nine starts, eventually losing the starter's position to Bruce Mathison. In 1986, he was Randy Wright's backup for the Green Bay Packers before he retired from football.
