Vic Janowicz Life

Victor Felix "Vic" Janowicz (February 26, 1930 – February 27, 1996) was an American football halfback for the Washington Redskins in the National Football League.

He played college football at Ohio State University and was drafted in the seventh round of the 1952 NFL Draft.

In 1976, Janowicz was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Early life

Janowicz was born and raised in Elyria, Ohio, as the son of Polish immigrants. He attended Holy Cross Elementary School and graduated from Elyria High School. Vic Janowicz Drive, which runs along the south side of Elyria High, has been named in honor. In addition, a life-size painting of Janowicz hangs in the school's lobby.

College career

At Ohio State University, Janowicz played college football. He won the Heisman Trophy in 1950 as a youth, which was a tailback in the single wing. Woody Hayes, a coach for Janowicz's senior year, said of him, "He was not only a great runner, but also passed was a placekicker and punter who was an excellent blocker." "The 'triple-threat' football player' was epitomized by Janowicz."

Professional career

Janowicz declined offers to play pro football in order to pursue a baseball career after college. He played for the Pittsburgh Pirates in the major leagues, but as a bench player, he only made.214 over two seasons. He returned to football with the Washington Redskins in 1954 and was their starting halfback in 1955. He sustained a serious brain injury in an auto accident that left him partially paralyzed and ended his athletic career during training camp in 1956.

Janowicz made a full recovery and became a Buckeye football broadcaster. He served as an account executive at a Columbus manufacturing company later in life, and from 1986 to state auditor, working as an administrative assistant.

In 1996, he died of cancer in Columbus, Ohio.
