Vesselina Katsarova (born July 18, 1965) is a Bulgarian mezzo-soprano opera performer.
Early life and education
Kasarova was born in Stara Zagora, Bulgaria's central town. She studied Russian as a second language and got a jump on music education under communist rule. She began taking piano lessons at the Pionerski Dom at the age of 4 (in 1970) and enrolled at Hristina Morfova School of Music and Performing Arts (normal morning classes and afternoon) in her hometown town in 1979. Kasarova became so drawn to the voice as a pianist and performed as an accompanist at recitals that after receiving her concert pianist diploma in 1987, she studied at Bulgarian State Music Academy, focusing on Mozart and Rossini's works. Kasarova performed "Habanera" from Bizet's Carmen for her first singing appearance in her home town. As a student, she appeared at Sofia National Opera. Rosina was a student at The Barber of Seville at the University of Seville for her graduation examination.
Singing career
She and 5 other students were sent by the Sofia Conservatory in 1989, their last year at the Sofia Conservatory. Luisa Lasser-Petrov, an Austrian artist, made a video of one of her shows, which she delivered to Herbert von Karajan, who immediately demanded to see her in Salzburg and then Vienna. They met in Salzburg, where she was invited to perform "Agnus Dei" from Bach's Mass in B minor. Karajan had intended to invite her to attend Bach's mass with him at the Salzburg Festival the following year, but she died shortly afterwards. Ioan Holender, the Vienna State Opera's Impresario (then jointly directing with Eberhard Wächter), was amazed by Lasser-Petrov to hear her auditions and immediately gave her a 2 yrs contract at the Vienna State Opera, beginning in 1991-92. When she returned to Bulgaria, she appeared in another audition at the Zürich Opera House, where she was joined by Christoph Groszer, the impresario of the Zürich Opera. He also hired her for his company right away.
Kasarova joined the ensemble in Zurich Opera in 1989 and made her debut in Wagner's Götterdämmerung as the 2nd Norn and Wellgunde. She quickly became a local favorite, with the audience raving over her unique vocal timbres, expressive power, and virtuoso ability. She also entered and won the Neue Stimmen competition that year. Bertelsmann, the owner of BMG Classics, sponsored the competition, resulting in her exclusive recording deal.
Annio in Mozart's La clemenza di Tito under Sir Colin Davis in 1991, she made her debut at the Salzburg Festival in 1991, performing two concerts in honor of Mozart's 200th birthday and as Annio in Mozart's La clemenza di Tito. She left Zurich to complete her apprenticeship at the Vienna State Opera for the first time in the role of Rosina in Rossini's The Barber of Seville in 1996 and stayed with the company for two years.
Her international career began in Salzburg in 1992, when she stepped in for Marilyn Horne as Tancredi in two concert performances of the Rossini opera at short notice. Since then, she has been a regular visitor to the summer festival, appearing in Mozart's La clemenza di Tito, Idomeneo, Mitridate, Mitridate, Mitridate, Salzburg's Nullité, the Mozart pastiche Ombra felice, and Berlioz's La damnation de Faust. She has appeared at other renowned opera festivals, including Bregenz, St. Moritz, Glyndebourne, Munich, and Pesaro.
Kasarova specialized in Mozart's operas and works by bel canto composers such as Rossini, Bellini, and Donizetti. Since appearing in Baroque trouser roles such as Orphée et Eurydice, Ruggiero in Gluck's Alcina and the title role in Ariodante in the late 1990s, she was highly sought after. Carmen, Bizet's first impression, has gotten more authentic and larger as she adds more dramatic roles to her repertoire. When asked about her repertory change in interviews, she reiterated that she intends to keep singing bel canto roles for as long as possible in order to maintain vocal health as she progresses into more challenging roles in French, Verdi & Wagnerian operas.
Kasarova's 2003 collaborating with Bulgarian composer Krassimir Kyurkchiyski to produce the album 'Bulgarian Soul'. In this collection of Bulgarian folk songs, she performs with the Cosmic Voices from Bulgaria and the Sofia Soloists Orchestra. "Many people are unaware of my homeland," says the author. "I would like them to discover the Bulgarian soul," the singer explained. Vesselina Kasarova: Bulgarian Encounters, the host of Deutsche Welle's Euromax television series, welcomed European audiences to Bulgaria, introducing European audiences to her homeland Bulgaria.
