Vernon Kay Life

Vernon Charles Kay (born 28 April 1974) is an English television presenter, radio DJ, and former model best known for his television appearances with ITV, including shows such as All Star Family Fortunes (2006–2009), Beat the Star (2008–2009) and Splash! (2013–2014) In 2010, Kay's other television appearances included The Whole 19 Yards, a Christmas entertainment show on Channel 4, and Let's Get Gold.

He began hosting 1000 Heartbeats, an ITV game show. He also appeared on BBC Radio 1 from 2004 to 2012.

Kay appeared on Radio X from September 2015 to March 2017. Since the 2018--19 season, Kay has been the main presenter for Formula E's live coverage for English speaking territories/platforms around the world.

Early life

Kay was born in Bolton, Greater Manchester, by Norman, a limousine chauffeur, and Gladys; he has a younger brother, Stephen, a primary school teacher. He attended St Joseph's RC High School in Horwich, near Bolton. He then earned a degree in environmental science at Manchester Polytechnic University (now Manchester Metropolitan University). Bolton Wanderers, he supports his hometown football team.

Personal life

Kay married Tess Daly at St Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Bolton on September 12, 2003. They have two children, born in 2004 and 2009.

On July 9, 2009, Kay was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Bolton for services to entertainment.

Kay is a vocal promoter of Bolton Wanderers F.C. He is also a fan of American football, joining the Manchester Allstars at the age of 13 and reuniting the team in 2011 for a one-off match against the Birmingham Lions. He signed for the London Warriors in 2011, and as a defensive back, he competes in the BAFANL Premier South division.

Kay is fond of flying model aircraft and drones.

Though Vernon was employed as a wood panel cutter and in his own words "live for the weekend," he was forced to attend the BBC Clothes Show Live, where he was scouted by a modelling company after being told to do a catwalk in return for some beers.

Kay was able to launch a television career with co-hosting on teen-targeted entertainment shows T4 and The Mag on Channel 4. In 2000, Kay based Fully Booked (called FBI, Completely Booked Interactive), as well as TOTP+ Plus and TOTP@Play. Boys and Girls, the Channel 4 game show, was cancelled after one series. He co-hosted the show in 2003. On ITV, Kay hosted the third series of Celebrities Under Pressure the following year.

All Star Family Fortunes began in 2006, and Kay appeared on primetime television show All Star Family Fortunes. It was announced in June 2015 that ITV would suspend the show until 2017, but it did not return. He appeared at Vernon Kay's Gameshow Marathon in 2007, after replacing Ant & Dec, who hosted the first series.

Kay appeared on Beat the Star, a television show from 2008 to 2009. The first series attracted 4.05 million viewers, while the second at 3.46 million.

On April 17, 2010, Kay began co-presenting The Whole 19 Yards with Caroline Flack, an eight-part game series that was produced at Pinewood Studios. The series attracted 4.1 million viewers. Kay was co-host of Skating with the Stars, a six-part series that was broadcast in the United States in 2010.

Kay was supposed to present Sing If You Can with Stacey Solomon but after filming the pilot episode, he felt that it would be better hosted by a comedian and was replaced by Keith Lemon.

Kay appeared on the Christmas Channel 4 show Home for the Holidays in December 2011. Kay hosted Let's Get Gold on ITV in the summer of 2012, but the show failed in viewing numbers and was cancelled.

Kay, Gabby Logan, and Tom Daley co-presented the ITV diving show Splash! After two seasons, the programme was scrapped.

Kay was confirmed as a host of The American Football Show, which was broadcast on Saturday mornings, after Channel 4 regained the NFL rights from the BBC.

Since 2014, Kay has appeared on five episodes of The One Show. Vernon debuted 1000 Heartbeats for ITV in 2015. In November 2015, the spectacle returned for a second run. Kay hosted Drive, a five-part entertainment series on ITV in 2016. On ITV2, he appeared in the second series of The Keith Lemon Sketch Show.

Kay co-presented The Hero Challenge with Kirsty Gallacher on Sky Sports in July 2017.

Kay hosted the non-broadcast pilot for a revival of Play Your Cards Right, a game show that was once hosted by Bruce Forsyth, but not for a series. He hosted a pilot for a new ITV game show Home Win, produced at Fountain Studios in Wembley in September 2015.

Kay will be the head of Channel 5's coverage of the 2017–18 Formula E motor racing season in November 2017. He co-presents the FIA's coverage of the 2018–19 season.

Kay will be included in the twentieth season of I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here, on November 20, 2020. On December 4, 2020, Kay qualified for the final and ended in third place.

Kay will host the British version of Game of Talents, which was revealed in March 2021. Kay was a last-minute replacement for Joel Dommett as co-host of the Red Nose Day's The Great Comic Relief Prizeathon in March 2022.

Kay performed on BBC Radio 1 in January 2004 and hosted an entertainment show every Sunday. He was given the 10 am-1 p.m. weekend slot, which had previously been hosted by Colin Murray and Edith Bowman and was broadcast on both Saturdays and Sundays on the popular radio network. Dick and Dom took over Sunday mornings in October 2007, and Kay's show then continued from 10 am to 1 p.m. on Saturday. In 2008, he was one of a team of DJ's who filled in for Edith Bowman while she was on maternity leave, as well as Fearne Cotton and Nihal.

On February 11, 2009, it was revealed that Kay would cover for Chris Moyles while he scaled Mount Kilimanjaro for Comic Relief, an act he did not perform on July 13, 2009, while Moyles took a day off. On Radio 1 on April 10, he also filled in for Pete Tong's Essential Selection. From ten August to August, Kay filled in for Chris Moyles from ten August to ten August, while he was on holiday. From the 30th of November 2009, Kay Moyles, Aled Haydn Jones, and Fearne Cotton were away in Uganda giving out malaria nets and seeing how the money raised for Comic Relief was being used.

On November 9, 2012, it was announced that Kay would leave BBC Radio 1 to spend more time with his family. He appeared at his last show on December 22nd and was eventually replaced by Matt Edmondson.

Kay returned to radio on the newly launched Radio X network three years after being barred from radio 1. Kay began presenting the weekday morning show from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in September 2015. On Friday, 17 March 2017, he departed the station.

After nine years away, Kay returned to BBC Radio to cover Rylan Clark on his BBC Radio 2 show Rylan on Saturday, and again on the 12 and 26 June as well as 3 July. On the week of May 2021, he stepped in for Steve Wright on Steve Wright in the Afternoon. On August 21, 2021, Kay was called on to play for Dermot O'Leary. He was supposed to fill in for Wright again from 26 August to 2021, but he only appeared on the 26 and 27 August before being relieved by Gethin Jones. From 13-to-many in 2021, he sat in again, beginning in 25 November – 2021, although Wright had an illness.

Kay has appeared in Shaun of the Dead (2004) and Keith Lemon: The Film (2012). In Hercules (2014), he made an uncredited appearance as a feasting hall guest.
