Early life

Verdine Adams, Jr. was born in Chicago, Illinois, on July 25, 1951. Verdine Sr., his father, was a doctor who also played the saxophone. He grew up listening to Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and other jazz artists. He was also influenced by Cleveland Eaton, the Beatles, the Motown band, and his two drummer brothers, Fred and Maurice. He heard a double bass in his high school orchestra class and knew he wanted to play bass when he was 15 years old.

He soon acquired a red electric bass, and took private lessons from Radi Velah of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, learning the Billè double bass technique, and learning the Billè double bass technique, and learning the trombonist Louis Satterfield of Wind & Fire's famed horn section, The Phenix Horns, on weekends. Verdine claims to know everything about the bass guitar from Louis Satterfield, and that James Jamerson, Paul McCartney, and Gary Karr were among his early bass influences.

Verdine began playing with local bands on the Chicago club scene rather than the upright bass. Meanwhile, brother Maurice, a former session drummer with Chess Records and a member of pianist Ramsey Lewis' trio, had formed the Salty Peppers, scoring a local hit that piqued Capitol Records' ears.

Maurice moved to Los Angeles in early 1970, attempting to capture the crew, which had renamed Earth, Wind & Fire, and called up Verdine, asking if he wanted to join, which he did, arriving in Los Angeles on June 6, 1970.

Personal life

Every year when the month of September rolls around, it's cause for celebration for the iconic music group Earth, Wind & Fire. The group released their hit song September in 1978, which is still one of their biggest hits to date, and it was added to the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry in 2018. The group - which lost drummer Fred White who passed away at 67 last year - is embarking on a new Heart & Soul tour that they're co-headlining with Chicago, which starts September 3 in Seattle.
