Vera Miles Career

Career

Miles lived in Los Angeles in 1949 and gained little fame in television and film, including a small appearance as a chorus girl in Two Tickets to Broadway (1951), a musical starring Janet Leigh, with whom Miles co-starred nine years later in the classic Alfred Hitchcock film Psycho. Miles, her first husband's name, because an active film actress had already gone by the name Vera Ralston. Miles were eventually hired in various studios and were eventually placed under contract. "I was dropped by the best studios in town," she recalled.

Miles' first recognized film appearance was in The Rose Bowl Story (1952), a romantic comedy in which she starred as a Tournament of Roses queen.

Miles appeared in the 1955 film Tarzan's Hidden Jungle as Tarzan's love interest, although he was under Warner Bros. Jeffrey Hunter's love interest in the John Wayne Western The Searchers (1956), she appeared in the films Wichita, directed by Jacques Tourneur and 23 Paces to Baker Street with Van Johnson the following year. Miles appeared in the film The Wrong Man in 1956, the fragile wife of Manny Balestrero, who was falsely accused of a murder and played by Henry Fonda. Alfred Hitchcock directed the film, it was one of just a few Hitchcock films based on true events.

Miles, who signed a five-year personal deal with Hitchcock in 1957, was widely regarded as the director's replacement to Grace Kelly. Miles had been in the role of Ralph Meeker's emotionally troubled new bride in "Reality," the pilot episode of his television series Alfred Hitchcock Presents, two years ago.

Production delays halted Vertigo (1958), a project that Hitchcock designed as a showcase for his young actor. Miles' subsequent pregnancy would cost her the lead role, which eventually went to Kim Novak, with whom Hitchcock reportedly clashed, but Ms. Novak has stated in interviews that she had no issues with Hitchcock on the film. At the time, Vertigo (which also starred James Stewart) was not a financial or economic success, with Hitchcock alleging that Novak was miscast. Despite Hitchcock's displeasure with Vertigo, he continued to work with Miles, eventually portraying her in what is perhaps the role in which she is best remembered, that of Lila Crane in Psycho. Marion Crane (Janet Leigh), Marion Crane's doomed motel guest, has been depicted in the film as the determined sister who is looking for her by both Marion's boyfriend and a private investigator. Miles later appeared in two episodes of The Alfred Hitchcock Hour (in 1962 and 1965).

Miles was reunited with director John Ford for the film The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance in 1962. Both Wayne and James Stewart, two very different men competing for her hand in marriage, are stalking alongside her former co-star from The Hunters, John Wayne.

Miles has appeared in many television shows throughout her career, including Gunsmoke, Wagon Train, Laramie, The Twilight Zone, and the western film Riverboat, starring Darren McGavin and Burt Reynolds, in addition to her film appearances. She appeared in ABC's The Fugitive's (titled "Fear in a Desert City") and guest-starred in episodes of The Outer Limits, Burke's Law, The Man from U.C.L.E., and Ironside.

Miles appeared in three episodes of CBS' My Three Sons in 1965. In the pilot episode of the television series "Affair in T'Sien Cha" last year, she co-starred with lead actor Robert Culp and Bill Cosby (although the pilot was not released until midway through the series's first season).

Miles appeared in several notable films, including the Walt Disney film Follow Me, Boys! (1966) Fred MacMurray, Hellfighters (1968), reuniting with John Wayne, reuniting with him again. Miles appeared in Wayne's film The Green Berets (also 1968), portraying Wayne's character's wife. However, her scenes were cut due to Warner Bros.'s desire for more action in the film.

Miles continued to appear in numerous television films and TV series during the 1970s, including the pilot for the TV series Cannon (broadcast in March 1971) as the wife of a deceased war comrade of private investigator Frank Cannon, played by William Conrad. During its run, she appeared in two more episodes of the series in different roles. In 1973, she appeared alongside Peter Falk in "Lovely But Lethal," a NBC's Columbo episode, playing a cosmetics queen who commits murder. She has also appeared in episodes of Hawaii Five-O, The Streets of San Francisco, and Fantasy Island.

Miles recalled Lila Crane in Psycho II in 1983, more than 20 years after Psycho, joining Anthony Perkins in the sequel. Miles and Perkins were the only two main stars of the original film to appear in this second installment. Miles continued to appear in a number of television and film productions during the 1980s, including appearances in the films The Initiation (1984) and Into the Night (1985), as well as guest-starring in episodes of The Love Boat (1982 and 1984) and Hotel (1984 and 1987). She appeared in three episodes broadcast in 1985, 1990, and 1991, she also appeared alongside Angela Lansbury in the TV series Murder, She Wrote. She appeared on "Thursday's Child," 1991, in what was her last television appearance. Miles appeared in the film Separate Lives (1995), just once more, before pulling out of the profession.
