Varun Tej is the son of Telugu actor and director Nagendra Babu. He is the nephew of actor Chiranjeevi and Pawan Kalyan. Niharika, his younger sister, is also an actor. Ram Charan, Allu Arjun, Allu Arjun, Allu Sirish, Sai Tej, and Panja Vaisshnav Tej are his cousins. He was educated at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad, and St. Mary's College, Hyderabad.

In his father Nagendra Babu's film Hands Up, Tej debuted as a child artist. He was just ten years old when he was a kid. He made his adult debut with Mukunda, opposite fellow newcomer Pooja Hegde. Mixed critiques were given to the film. Critics have praised Kanche's second attempt, starring Pragya Jaiswal. The Times of India lauded Tej's "capability to shift gears from intense to sobriety," praised him for his "capability to shift gears from intense to sobriety." Loafer's second outing Mister was a box office disappointment, as well as his 2017 outing.
