Early life and education
Vanessa Beecroft was born in Genoa, Italy, on April 25, 1969, and she was raised in Santa Margherita Ligure and Malcesine near Lake Garda. Both of her parents were teachers; she was born to Maria Luisa and Andrew Beecroft, the British father. Her family migrated to Holland Park, west London, shortly after she was born.
Her parents divorced when she was three years old, and she didn't see her father or her younger brother again until she was 15 years old. Beecroft's mother raised Beecroft alone in a tiny Italian village without cars, no television, and no phone. She was hospitalized in childhood for overeating specific foods she felt would improve her body, and she had trouble with an eating disorder.
She attended Brera Academy in Milan, Italy, from 1988 to 1993. VB01 (1993) was her first art exhibit in Milan, featuring a group of female students from Brera Academy wearing Beecroft's clothing and sharing Beecroft's "Book of Food," a diary chronicling her food intake from 1985 to 1993. Beecroft's "Book of Food" chronicled her bingesome eating habits and was cited in her later work, but it was not related to the performances.
She landed in New York City in 1996, on the invitation of art dealer Jeffrey Deitch, who arranged her arrival.
Personal life
Vanessa Beecroft was previously married to marketer Greg Durkin. For many years, the two families lived in Cold Spring Harbor, New York. The marriage ended in divorce. Durkin and Beecroft had two sons together (born in 2001 and 2004). Federico Spadoni, a photographer, had been married to her then. Both Beecroft and Spadoni have one daughter and one son together (born 2009 and 2012).
