On April 26, Johnson was activated by the Jets with a non-football injury designation, but the former Detroit Lions running back took to social media to reveal his side of the story. Johnson has explained that after he told the team that he had a torn pectoral muscle while working out, he was advised by the team doctor to perform surgery, which he obliged.

On Sunday, the 21st anniversary of the terror attack, New York Jets actors wore 'Never Forever' t-shirts in honor of the victims of September 11. On arrival at the MetLife stadium before the season opener against the Baltimore Ravens, Ty Johnson, Dan Feeney, and Conor McDermott were all seen wearing the shirts. It comes as tributes are paid around the region.
