Don't rely on Ben Stokes, exploit Reece Topley's height and left-arm angle and make a fast start in the powerplay - five areas England must improve to get back on track at the World Cup

LAWRENCE BOOTH: England will not be able to deal another stumble against Bangladesh in Dharamshala on Tuesday after losing by nine wickets by New Zealand on the first day of the World Cup in Ahmedabad. Here are five ways they can be more effective starting with 12 off Trent Boult's first over, but England slowed so much that only 39 people were able to get the next nine off the road, with a sluggish 51 for one of the powerplay was put into perspective by New Zealand's 81 for one of the same stage.
England defeats New Zealand by 2-1 series lead and further lays down their World Cup credentials thanks to Ben Stokes' record-breaking innings

Ben Stokes may have been forgiven for sticking his feet up following an epic Ashes sequence, but this is not how this remarkable cricketer operates. Not a week into his one-day return, but he spanked New Zealand for 182 - the highest score by an England player in 782 one-day internationals dating back 52 years. In 124 balls of mayhem, handshakes from the fielders, and a standing ovation from an appreciative crowd, there were 15 fours and nine sixes, as well as a standing ovation from an appreciative audience. Above all, Stokes was ominous for opponents, and they may have been sent to assist England in defending their title in India. It's odd to think he never reached 102 years old.

During Ben Stokes' third ODI against New Zealand at The Oval on Wednesday, he posted the highest score in England's ODI history. Stokes smashed 182 runs from 124 balls, hitting nine sixes and 15 fours along the way. The Test captain, who has come out of one day retirement ahead of the World Cup, fell just short of a remarkable double century when he was dismissed off the bowling of Benjamin Lister

PAUL NEXMAN AT THE AGENES BOWL: They may have started off badly, but England eventually looked more like World Cup participants by defeating New Zealand convincingly and leveling the one-day series. Trent Boult was swiggling the ball around corners on his 100th one-day international appearance after rain had reduced the second game of this series at the Age of Bowl to 34-overs, a side. But firstly, Liam Livingstone led them to a more than satisfactory 226 for seven wickets, and then two of their trio of left-armers in Reece Topley and David Willey took three wickets apiece, leaving England victors victors by 79 runs.

As New York chased down 183 to win by seven wickets on Sunday night, the West Indies international blasted 10 fours and 13 sixes. Pooran brought the Orcas attack to all parts of the city, raising his half century in just 16 balls (a tournament record) before he reached his ton after 40 deliveries.
STUART BROAD: We'll likely agree that we can't do our best against them

We're about to embark on what promises to be the most exciting series between England and Australia since 2005. Australia has a superb bowling attack and some of the best batters in the world; as a team, we are on the highest level. We have a fab deal. We may well conclude that we can't continue to do the way we have done for the past 12 months against them.
The BUMBLE OF THE TEST: To save the game, there must be a redistribution of income

BUMBLE ON THE TEST: With the visitors leading by 98 runs in the first Test between New Zealand and England, the visitors were left perfectly poised. Tom Blundell's brilliant century kept New Zealand in the game, giving their bowlers something to remember when England was called back in. England will feel, despite the loss of their two openers relatively cheaply, that they will play the game away from the hosts - as they have against virtually every team under Ben Stokes-Brendon McCullum's leadership. Over day two of the first Test between New Zealand and England, David 'Bumble' Lloyd casts his eye back.
Trent Boult will be recalled by New Zealand in the first Test against England

Trent Boult's seam bowling issues against England this week will have taken longer than half an hour, but Black Caps head coach Gary Stead has revealed that a late call-up never got off the ground. Boult is one of only four Kiwis to claim more than 300 Test wickets, and his presence in the day/night Test in Mount Maunganui would greatly improve the home team's hand. However, the picture is more complicated than that. The left-armer negotiated a release from his national deal in August, with a view on cashing in on franchise sales, and his involvement in the IL20 league meant he was no surprise.
Following the Big Bash controversy, Josh Hazlewood and Trent Boult lead calls for the change of the rule

Following Michael Neser's controversial catch on Sunday, two of the best bowlers in the world have called on cricket to rewrite one of the game's rules. During Brisbane's thrilling 15-run victory over the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash, Jordan Silk was dismissed by the heat, but the catch caused a lot of discussion as to whether it was a legitimate dismissal or a six. Neser grabbed Mark Steketee and stumbled over the cord as Silk carved him high above the extra-cover boundary.

Brody Crouch of Melbourne had 'two miracle catches in a single night' as he knocked down two early contenders for the tournament's title in a dramatic Big Bash League opener on Tuesday. In their innings, the Stars could only muster 8-12, but they were on track to defend their modest figure in Canberra, with the Sydney Thunder needing eight to advance to the final. However, Gurinder Sandhu's fourth ball of the 20th century over, before Melbourne keeper Joe Clarke let the Thunder win by four byes.

Kane Williamson, the Black Caps' skipper, put his team in first place, but the Kiwis could only muster 152 on their final four shootout on the field where they smashed 200 past Australia. Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam faced off a flyer in the powerplay, but they kept their foot on the accelerator, leading to a big win in the SCG.

England's quest for the Twenty20 World Cup gets off in Australia on Saturday against Afghanistan. And although Jos Buttler's team is brimming with a slew of talent at both bat and ball, there are several sides in the tournament's second black ball tournament win in three years. Here Sportsmail takes a look at the five sides that will prove the toughest test if England are to lift the trophy next month

After winning the final one-day international in Cairns by 25 runs, Australia has whitewashed New Zealand 3-0 in the Chappell-Hadlee Series. On Saturday, Finch, the captain of Australia's T20 World Cup on home soil next month, announced that he was retiring from one-day cricket.

Australia clinched the series against New Zealand after a 113-run victory on Thursday, with Adam Zampa taking his first five-wicket haul in one-day international cricket. After being sent in, Australia's top order failed and collapsed to 54-5, but the home team roared to post 195-9. Steve Smith scored 61, while Mitchell Starc (38) and Josh Hazlewood (23) married for an unbeaten 47. In response, New Zealand was tilated for 82, with legspinner Zampa returning 5-35 from nine overs, with three of them being ruled lbw.
I still have ambitions in all three modes; Will Smeed, the White-ball king, wants to have it all.'
www.dailymail.co.uk,
August 12, 2022
Will Smeed is perhaps the best case study of a modern-day cricketer, who is now on a diet of white-ball cricket and now with a slew of franchise opportunities around the globe. On Wednesday, the 20-year-old made history by becoming the first person to reach a century in the Hundred by defeating Birmingham Phoenix's unbeaten 101 off 50 balls. This week, it was confirmed that he would be a member of the MI Emirates team, including Kieron Pollard and Trent Boult, as the inaugural UAE ILT20 begins in January. Smeed has been active in the Pakistan Super League and the Abu Dhabi T10 in the last year, as well as playing for Somerset in the T20 Blast, and there is every possibility of an IPL transfer. Given that the Mumbai Indians are owned by Reliance Industries, who bought MI Emirates, there is every chance of an IPL contract around the corner.
