Tonya Pinkins (born May 30, 1962) is an American television, film, and theater actress best known for her portrayal of Livia Frye on the soap opera All My Children and her appearances on Broadway.

She has been nominated for three Tony Awards (winning one) and has received Obie, Lortel, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, AUDLECO, Garland, Los Angeles. Clarence Derwent, Drama Critics Circle, and the NAACP Theater Awards were given out.

She has been nominated for the Olivier, Helen Hayes, Noel, Joseph Jefferson, NAACP Image, Soap Opera Digest, and Ovation Awards.

For Jelly's Last Jam, she received the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical.

Early life and education

Pinkins was born in Chicago, Illinois. Her father, a police officer and insurance salesman, was a police officer, and her mother, a retired postal employee, was a postal worker. Eric and Thomas Swoope, as well as a sister Tamera Swoope, are her two brothers.

Pinkins was involved in the arts from a young age. She spent time at Whitney Young Magnet High School and then studied acting at the Goodman Theatre Young People's Program. She attended Carnegie Mellon University's BFA Musical Theatre program but was cast in Merrily We Roll Along and decided to concentrate on her work rather than pursue her studies.

Pinkins returned to school in 1996, graduating with a bachelor degree in creative writing from Columbia College Chicago and a year at California Western School of Law in San Diego.

Pinkins received a Tony Award for her appearance as Sweet Anita in Jelly's Last Jam. She had been nominated for her part in Play On! She appeared in Caroline, or Change, where she appeared in the title role. Merrily We Roll Along, The Birth Of A Death Foretold, The Wild Party, House of Flowers, A Time To Kill, and If Ya Hear Me are among her Broadway credits.

Pinkins has appeared in many off-Broadway productions, including the comedic role of Mopsa, the Shepherdess, in The Winter's Tale, a Riverside Shakespeare Company production at The Shakespeare Center in 1983.

Pinkins appeared in the world premiere of Kirsten Greenidge's Milk Like Sugar in La Jolla Playhouse in 2011 and was awarded a Craig Noel award for Best Feature Actress in a Play in 2012. She reprised her role in the Peter Jay Sharp Theatre as a protagonist and received the 2012 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play.

Pinkins appeared in Katori Hall's "Hurt Village," the gritty drama about life and change in a Memphis apartment project, earned its world premiere at Off-Broadway's Signature Theatre Company as part of the company's inaugural season in 2012.

In 2014, she appeared in Ed Bullins' revival of The Fabulous Miss Marie opposite Roscoe Orman; in the Broadway performance of Holler If You Hear Me; and the world premiere of Branden Jacobs-Jenkins' War at Yale Repertory. She has appeared on television shows as Army Wives, 24, The Cosby Show, Cold Case, Criminal Minds, and others.

On the CBS soap As the World Turns, Pinkins created the character of "Heather Dalton" during the mid-1980s. She appeared in All My Children in 1991 as Livia Frye. Pinkins left All My Children in 1995 but she returned to her role in 2003. She was on contract with the program from March 2004 to June 2006, when she was downgraded to recurring status.

On 24 years old, she competed for Amala Motobo. On the television show Gotham, Pinkins portrayed Ethel Peabody. Mimi Corcoran appeared on the Hulu science fiction limited series 11.22.63, based on Stephen King's book of the same name and starring James Franco and Sarah Gadon. Sandra was played Sandra in ABC television series Scandal on March 16, 2017.
