Ministers have been advised by ministers that hiring grandparents who help with childcare is a good idea

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 21, 2023
Ministers should consider paying grandparents who help with childcare because of a shortage in the number of nursery spaces available, according to MPs today. The Treasury Committee of the House of Commons heard how a'modest payment' could be made to those who help look after their grandchildren. According to a leading economist, this would be a 'good alternative' to government attempts to raise the availability of childcare to encourage parents to return to work. It came amid warnings of'significant challenges' for the childcare industry as a result of Chancellor Jeremy Hunt's extension of free hours for parents. At his Budget last week, Mr Hunt revealed a £5.3 billion shake-up of childcare in England. All infants over the age of nine months were eligible for up to 30 hours a week of free childcare. However, fears have been raised over how the sector will be able to satisfy the increasing demand for nursery spaces and raise the number of employees.
