José Antonio Plana, better known as Tony Plana, is a Cuban American actor and director who was born on April 19, 1952.
He is best known for his role as Ignacio Suarez, the father of Betty Suarez on ABC's Ugly Betty and also for voicing Manuel "Manny" Calavera in the video game Grim Fandango.
Early life and education
Plana was born in Havana, Cuba. In 1960, his family immigrated to Miami. He studied at Loyola Marymount University and was trained in acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, United Kingdom.
Career
Plana is also known for his ability in acting and directing for the stage, despite being well-known for his role in feature films and television. He has produced and directed a number of Shakespeare performances for minority audiences, and has performed extensively in Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and New York City's Theatre companies, including leading appearances on Broadway and at New York City's Public Theater. Rudy appeared in Luis Valdez's play Zoot Suit in Los Angeles and went on to play Rudy in the film version.
Plana has worked, produced, and written for television in series, miniseries, and specials including Hill Street Blues, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Commander in Chief, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, The West Wing, 24, and Cagney & Lacey.
Plana has appeared in films including An Officer and a Gentleman, Three Amigos, Goal!, and Lone Star. Manny Calavera's voice in the LucasArts 1998 adventure game Grim Fandango is known to PC gamers as Manny Calavera. Alejandro Perez, Gabrielle Solis' abusive stepfather, appeared in Desperate Housewives in 2011. In the show's eighth season, he also supervised Witch's Lament, a Desperate Housewives episode.
