Early life
Tony DiTerlizzi was born in Los Angeles in 1969, the first of three children. The name DiTerlizzi means "from Terlizzi", a village in Italy's Apulia province. He grew up in South Florida where he attended South Fork High School. He went to college at the Florida School of the Arts and The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale where he earned a graphic design degree in 1992.
Personal life
DiTerlizzi lives and works in Amherst, Massachusetts with his wife and manager, children's book author Angela DiTerlizzi and their daughter, Sophia.
Career
DiTerlizzi and his partner Angela embarked on a freelance illustration career in TSR's Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game after graduating. "I was so excited when I got a chance to work on [the 1993 Monstrous Manual tome]. My entire aim was to 'blow away' the other artists. It helped me get into the Planescape setting."
DiTerlizzi worked on the 1994 Planescape Campaign Setting and its successors, reimagining the Outer Planes' look, "not only buildings, but the people had to have a rusted, organic look." This seemed to have arisened naturally in my art style. "I began to work on Planescape when I first discovered anime and Japanese fantasy art, such as Yoshitaka Amano." According to Shannon Appelcline, the artist's work was the backbone of the setting.
DiTerlizzi continued to work on TSR, as well as White Wolf Publishing's Changeling and Werewolf Storyteller games, and illustrated several Magic cards.
He also illustrated books titled Giant Bones by Peter Beagle in 1997 and Greg Bear's Dinosaur Summer 1998. Jimmy Zangwow's Out-of-this-World Moon Pie Adventure, followed in 2001 by Ted, which received the 2002 Zena Sutherland Award.
The Spider and the Fly, Mary Howitt's best-selling book and for which he was given the Caldecott Honor Medal in 2003, was his next project and for which he was a New York Times Best Seller.
The Spiderwick Chronicles was created by DiTerlizzi and Holly Black, who were acquired by Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing and Nickelodeon Movies in 2002 and 2003. It was then translated into 30 different languages. Arthur Spiderwick's Field Guide to the Fantastic World Around You was released in 2005, with Paramount Pictures releasing a live-action film version of the series, with DiTerlizzi playing as co-executive producer.
Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles, a sequel series, debuted in September 2007 and continued into 2009.
Simon & Schuster published The Search for WondLa, the first book in a trilogy, written and illustrated by DiTerlizzi in 2010. In 2012, a WondLa Hero was introduced, and in 2014, a Battle for WondLa was released.
Realms: The Roleplaying Art of Tony DiTerlizzi was published in 2015 by Dark Horse Books, with words from DiTerlizzi and a series of paintings and photographs from his early career. "If you will aspire to monsters, Tony's art has a distinct flavor, as well as a lust for monsters." ... ... His animals have the charm of Henson or Rackham, but they carry with them hints of their own environment. This is an old school fashioned in the United States. .. Can you treasure these art works as much as I do, as Tony stands alone as a world creator and a weaver of tales. Guillermo del Toro quotes him.
In 2014 by Disney Lucasfilm Press (an imprint of Disney Publishing Worldwide), DiTerlizzi wrote and designed Star Wars: Luke Skywalker, Jedi Knight. Ralph McQuarrie's illustrations went along with his words.
Mo Willems, a writer and illustrator, collaborated with DiTerlizzi to illustrate the book The Story of Diva and Flea, which was inspired by Willems' time in Paris. In 2015, Disney-Hyperion launched the New York Times bestselling book.
