Tommy Ellis Life

Tommy Ellis is a retired NASCAR short track racer who competed in the 1970s and 1980s.

He won the last national late model sportsman championship in 1981, the last year before the format was changed from "points chasing" late model sportsman racing at various short tracks around the country (now known as the Whelen All-American Series) to the new touring style, which is now known as the Xfinity Series.

In 1988, he appeared in the successor series.

Tommy Ellis Career

Racing career

Ellis' rise (12 poles and 8 wins) in the first two seasons of the Busch Series earned him a chance at a Winston Cup ride. In 1986, he was driving in the majority of three seasons in the Chevrolet camp. He was also regarded as a superb sub-driver in the Cup Series, filling in for Neil Bonnett in 1989 and replacing a suspended Geoff Bodine at Junior Johnson Motorsports two years later.

Ellis returned to J&J Racing in 1986 after being banned from Freedlander Racing. Ellis claimed nine poles and seven races between 1988 and 1990. In 1988, he became the Busch Series champion in an unsponsored Buick. He competed in the Winston at Charlotte Motor Speedway in 1991, replacing Bodine.

His Busch Series career totals are 28 poles (second all-time behind Mark Martin) and 22 wins (tied for his thirteenth all-time with Sam Ard).

Ellis' last Busch Series appearance was in 1995.

Ellis, along with Bobby Hamilton, was a stunt driver for the film Days of Thunder and raced race cars in numbered 51 and 18 in selected races.
