Tom Dempsey Life

Thomas John Dempsey (born January 12, 1947) is a former American football placekicker for the New Orleans Saints (1969–1974), Philadelphia Eagles (1971–1974), Los Angeles Rams (1977) and Buffalo Bills (1978–1979).

He attended high school at San Dieguito High School and played college football at Palomar College.

Unlike the "soccer style" approach, which was becoming more popular throughout his career, Dempsey's kicking style was the traditional (of the day) straight-toe style.

Early life

Dempsey was born in Milwaukee and attended high school and college in Southern California. He attended high school at San Dieguito High School and played college football at Palomar College. He was born with no toes on his right foot and no fingers on his right hand. Dempsey wore a flat-front kicking shoe that had no toe box.

Personal life and death

Dempsey married Carlene and had three children, one named Ashley.

Dempsey died of dementia in January 2013. Daniel Amen, a psychologist, was the first to suspect Dempsey's brain of harm. Amen discovered three holes in the brain along with other injuries during medical examinations and scans.

During the pandemic, Dempsey tested positive for COVID-19. He was one of 15 people at a New Orleans senior residence to test positive for the virus. Dempsey died as a result of COVID-19's complications on April 4.

Tom Dempsey Career

NFL career

As time expired to allow the Saints a 19-17 victory over the Detroit Lions on November 8, 1970 at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans, Dempsey is best known for kicking a 63-yard field goal. Prior to 1974, goal posts in the NFL were on the goal line rather than end lines. With time running out in the game, the Saints attempted a field goal with holder Joe Scarpati spotting at the Saints' own 37-yard line. Jackie Burkett's snap was fine, and Dempsey made the field goal when the ball fell just over the bar. In the worst season for the Saints, the victory was one of only two for the team.

Dempsey led Bert Rechichar's NFL record for the longest field goal by seven yards with the kick. Jason Elam in 1998, Sebastian Janikowski in 2011, and David Akers in 2012, before Matt Prater broke it on December 8, 2013. Justin Tucker of the Baltimore Ravens tied for the first time with a 66-yard field goal as time expired to defeat the Detroit Lions on Sunday, September 26, 2021. Both Dempsey's and Graham Gano's 63-yarder in 2018 were the best field goal to win a game in its final play.

Dempsey was born with toes on his right foot and no fingers on his right hand. He wore a flattened and enlarged toe shoe. The custom made a $200 (equivalent to $1,396 in 2021) shoe sparked controversy over whether such a shoe gave a player an unfair advantage. When reporters asked him if it was unfair, he said, "Unfair, eh?" when reporters asked him if it was unfair. How can you kick in a 63 yard field goal to win it with two seconds left an' yer wearing a square shoe, oh yeah, and no toes were allowed." In addition, when an investigation of his kick was done by ESPN Sport Science, it was discovered that his new shoe had no advantage over him. In fact, the smaller contact area may have expanded, not reduced, the margin for error.

To discourage further long field goal attempts, the league made two rule revisions in the subsequent years. The first attempt was in 1974, when the goal posts were moved from the goal line to the back of the end zone, adding ten yards to the kick distance, and awarding the ball to the defense on a missed kick at the spot where the ball was snapped. In 1994, this was redesigned to the place where the kick took place. In 1977, the NFL introduced the "Tom Dempsey Law" (informally known as the "Tom Dempsey Rule) that "any shoe worn by a player with an artificial limb on his kicking leg must have a kicking surface that conforms to that of a conventional kicking shoe."

Since Dempsey was the only kicker to make a field goal from more than sixty yards prior to the goal posts' relocation, he remains the only quarterback in NFL history to successfully kick a field goal from beyond his own team's 40-yard line.
