Club career

Heath served with the New Jersey Wildcats, then known as the PSA Wildcats in 2005, where she helped the team win the USL W-League Championship in 2005 and later became the team's Runners-Up in 2004. She played for the Hudson Valley Quickstrike Lady Blues last season, finishing second in their division and advanced to the 2007 Conference Semifinals. She spent one season with the Pali Blues in California, winning the USL Western Conference championship and the W-League Championship title.

She was the first overall pick in the Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) 2010 college draft in 2010 and was drafted by the expansion team Atlanta Beat. She missed the remainder of the 2010 season after suffering a right ankle injury in her third appearance for the Beat. She made her first appearances for the club in all three seasons.

Heath, alongside Beat teammates Eniola Aluko and Angie Kerr, were traded to Sky Blue FC in return for the fourth and eighth pick in the 2011 WPS Draft, as well as future considerations. Heath made twelve appearances for Sky Blue, beginning in three games. During regular season play, the team came in fifth with 5 victories, 4 draws, and 9 losses.

Heath played for the WPSL Elite League in 2012 after the WPS was disbanded. She was recovering from an ankle injury at the start of the season. She then played for one game with New York Fury and was later called to the national team.

Heath also signed a six-month deal with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the top-tier French league, Division 1 Féminine, starting on May 23, 2013. In the twelve appearances she made for the club, she scored five goals. From the Portland Thorns FC website, her six-month stint was referred to as her education.

Heath was back from PSG from Portland Thorns FC in September 2013 until June 2014 after she suffered with a sore right foot in the 2013 NWSL Championship. She made seven appearances without scoring during her second stint with the club.

Heath was one of the seven players allocated to the Portland Thorns FC for their initial roster as part of the NWSL Player Allocation. She joined the Thorns in July 2013, helping them reach their third-place finish in the NWSL after ending the season with Paris-Saint Germain. After defeating the Western New York Flash 2–0, the Thorns secured the 2013 NWSL Championship, with Heath scoring the game-winning goal from a direct free kick. She was named as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the championship tournament.

Heath had five assists in five games, two of whom in a 2–1 victory over the Orlando Pride, and was named NWSL Player of the Month for April. Fans also scored her first goal of the 2016 season against the Washington Spirit, which was also voted NWSL goal of the week. For week 6, she was also named NWSL Player of the Week. In Portland's final game against Sky Blue FC, Heath claimed her 10th assist of the season, defeating the NWSL's previous record of 9 assists by a single player in a single season. When Christine Sinclair was injured during the season, she was named as the team's captain.

Heath skipped the majority of the 2017 NWSL season due to a lingering back injury that kept her out of action. It was first reported as a minor injury that was forecast to result in a short period out of play, with an estimated return date set against the Boston Breakers on May 27. The back injury lasted longer than anticipated, so she was sent to Los Angeles and was handled by her teaching staff. On August 28, Heath was taken off the disabled list and added to the active roster. In May, it was revealed that she would take up a role as the team's Development Academy as the Youth Technical Director. Heath returned in time for the end of the season on September 23 versus Orlando Pride at the 60th minute. In the NWSL Championship Semi-finals, she got off to a good start on October 7 against the same team. Emily Sonnett, who helped her team win by a score of 4–1, was on a 1–0 victory over North Carolina Courage, who defeated the NWSL Championship in a 1–0 victory.

During the 2017 NWSL Championship game, Heath sustained an ankle injury and underwent surgery at the start of 2018. She missed the first four games of the 2018 NWSL season due to her recovery from surgery. Heath returned to the Thorns lineup against the Utah Royals on April 28th, where she appeared in the 57th minute and scored a goal ten minutes later. The game was a 1–1 draw. During the regular season, Heath scored 7 goals and 7 assists. For August, she was named to the NWSL Team of the Month. In Portland's 2–1 victory over the Seattle Reign in the semi-final, Heath scored another goal, setting up a re-match with the North Carolina Courage in the final. In the final, Portland was defeated by the Courage 3–0. Heath was one of five nominees for NWSL Most Valuable Player, and her Thorns teammate Lindsay Horan was named one of five finalists for the award. Heath was named to the 2018 NWSL Best XI.

Heath started the 2019 season by winning both the NWSL Goal of the Week and Player of the Week for the first week of play.

Heath has decided not to participate in the 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup after the 2020 season was marred by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Portland lost her NWSL rights to Racing Louisville FC with the 2020 NWSL Expansion Draft on November 12, 2020, having left Heath unprotected.

Manchester United of the FA Women's Super League announced on September 9, 2020, that Heath and her national teammate Christen Press have been signed to one-year contracts. In a 3–0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion, she made her debut on October 4 as a 70th minute replacement, earning an assist. She scored her first goal for the club on October 18 as part of a 4–2 WSL win over West Ham United. Heath scored her first Manchester derby goal in a 2–2 league draw with Manchester City on November 14, helping the club get off to a 0–2 downbeat. Heath was named WSL Player of the Month for November on December 11, 2020.

Heath was named to FIFA FIFPro Women's World11 at The Best FIFA Football Awards 2020 on December 17, 2020.

Heath had since been sidelined by an ankle injury since January 2021, and she had returned to the United States to try and recover in time for the summer's Olympic Games, prematurely ending her debut with United. Heath will leave the club on June 24 after the month's end.

Heath signed for Arsenal on September 3, 2021, the first time he had signed. During Arsenal's 5–0 win over Manchester City on September 26, 2021, she made her debut as a substitute on home against Manchester City on September 26, 2021.

Heath and Arsenal mutually agreed to end her employment early in 2022 after being ruled out for the remainder of the season due to a minor hamstring injury sustained in preparation.

Heath had returned to the NWSL and signed with OL Reign on June 16, 2022.

International career

Heath played on many youth national teams, including the U-16s in 2003–2004 and the U-17s in 2004–05. Heath was a standout at the 2006 FIFA U-20 Women's World Championship in Russia, despite being one of the last players selected for the World Cup roster. In total, Heath played 24 appearances for the United States under the age of 20, scoring five goals. Heath was a member of the silver medal-winning USA Women's team at the 2007 Pan American Games in Brazil, where she was in the starting lineup for the championship match.

In the Four Nations Tournament in China, Heath made her first appearance for the senior national team against Finland on January 18, 2008. She was accepted into the United States roster for the 2008 Summer Olympics at the age of 20. As the United States went on to win the gold medal, she earned three caps during the tournament. Heath was one of three college athletes to represent the United States at the 2008 Olympics. Heath also scored two goals in 2008, earning 17 caps and scoring two goals. At the 2008 Algarve Cup, she scored her first international goal against China.

Heath received two more caps for the USWNT in 2009 after his debut against Canada in July. She did not play for the United States in 2010 due to an illness and a major ankle injury that required surgery during the WPS season.

During the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup in Germany, Heath made her FIFA Women's World Cup debut at the age of 23. She made her debut in the second half of the United States' group-stage match against Colombia. Heath made four appearances during the World Cup, but her last three appearances came in the knockout round. Heath as a replacement for Megan Rapinoe in the World Cup finals. The game was tied 2–2 and went to penalties. Heath was the third person in the United States to take a penalty, but her shot was saved by Japanese keeper Ayumi Kaihori, and the United States lost 3–1 on penalties.

Heath was a member of the 2012 US Olympic team and played in all six games. In four of the six games, she started and played the full 90 and had three assists throughout the tournament. Her first assist came against France on the group stage, when she gave Alex Morgan a crossing pass that resulted in the final score 4–2. With Wambach, who scored the second in a 3–0 victory, she was the second assist, against Colombia. At the 87th minute, she delivered a long ball down the left flank to Sydney Leroux, who scored through the goalkeeper Jenny Bindon's legs, ending the game with a score of 2–0.

Heath played for a regular starter on the Canadian National Women's World Cup in 2015, starting five of the United States' seven games. Heath scored in the 54th minute of the World Cup Final, with Morgan Brian's assistance. The United States won the World Cup by defeating Japan 5–2 in Japan.

Heath scored two goals in 2016 Olympic qualifying, assisting the US in qualifying for the 2016 Summer Olympics.

In 2016, Heath performed in her third Olympic Games. She appeared in three games for the United States and gave two assists. In the quarter-finals, the United States team was eliminated by Sweden on penalties. In fan voting, Heath was named as the NWSL Player of Match Day 1 and 2.

Heather scored 6 goals and eight assists in 20 games for the United States in 2016. Heath was named 2016 U.S Soccer Female Player of the Year after receiving 40% of the vote, ahead of Crystal Dunn with 34%.

Heath's last appearance in all three games at the 2017 SheBelieves Cup, he'll make one more appearance in the United States in 2017 due to a nagging back injury and an ankle injury sustained in the 2017 NWSL Championship match.

Heath returned to action in a friendly against China on June 12 in a 2–1 victory after ankle surgery in January 2018. In the final game against Brazil, the United States defeated Brazil 4–1. The United States won the tournament by a goal difference over Australia.

Heath scored four goals at the 2018 CONCACAF Women's Championship, which included two goals in a semi-final match against Jamaica. The United States won the game 6–0 and clinched a spot in the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup. She was named in the Best XI for the CONCACAF Women's Championship.

Heath finished 2018 with 7 goals and six assists, but only in ten games. Alex Morgan, one of five finalists for the 2018 United States Female Player of the Year, was one of five finalists for the award.

Heath was selected to the squad for the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup in May 2019. Six of the seven matches took place in the United States, making it the only country after Germany in 2007 to successfully defend the title.

Former Manchester United star Tobin Heath has claimed that the club's women's team were let down by the board during the 2020-21 season.
