Tim Finn Career

Career

Finn earned his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Auckland in 1971. With friends and future Split Enz bandmembers Mike Chunn, Robert Gillies, Philip Judd, and Noel Crombie, he jammed in music practice room 129 (later the name of a Split Enz album). Music soon became more important to him than his academics. He left university in 1972. A few months later, Phil and Tim formed Split Ends, which later became Split Enz in 1975, just months before they left New Zealand for Melbourne. Nine studio albums were released between 1975 and 1984. Split Enz's last show was held in Auckland on December 4, 1984.

Finn's first success away from Split Enz was when his failed demo "They Won't Let My Girlfriend Talk to Me" became a top ten hit for Australian band Jimmy and the Boys in 1981. Finn's debut solo album, Escapade, was released in 1983 while still a member of Split Enz. This was a huge commercial success both in Australia and New Zealand, as well as a hit song "Fraction Too Much Friction," which featured a more dynamic sound than Split Enz had expected. Finn left the band permanently in June 1984 to concentrate on a solo career after contributing four songs to Split Enz's Conflict Emotions.

Finn's second studio album, Big Canoe, was released in 1986. The album featured a variety of musical styles, including guitars, orchestral backing, and traditional Indian instruments, most notable on the single "No Thunder, No Fire, No Rain," which was inspired by the Bhopal chemical disaster. Despite being number three on the New Zealand charts, Big Canoe's hopes of becoming the international breakthrough that Finn or record company Virgin had hoped for.

Finn wrote music for Les Patterson Saves the World's Les Patterson Saves the World, which resulted in the Australian hit "You Save the World." Finn appeared in The Coca Cola Kid, then-girlfriend Greta Scacchi, and a larger one in her Italian-shot romance La Donna Luna (The Moon Goddess).

Finn's eponymous third album, Tim Finn, was released in late 1988 by Capitol Records. The album received lauded praise, and "Parihaka," based on a Mori village known for its nonviolation of European occupiers.

Finn, and fellow New Zealand singer/songwriters Bic Runga and Dave Dobbyn were among the songwriters on the album Together in Concert: Live in 2000. The three performers were each showcased in August and September 2000 in venues around New Zealand. Both the live and album feature all three performers as vocal and instrumental backing on each other's songs. On the New Zealand charts, the album debuted at number two.

Finn performed further for theatre in 2015, with an opera Star Navigator commissioned by New Zealand Opera, Victorian Opera, and West Australian Opera, and the musical Ladies in Black premiered in Brisbane by the Queensland Theatre Company in November 2015.

Finn and Phil Manzanera began collaborating on an album titled Caught by the Heart as England and New Zealand entered COVID-19 lockdown in 2020. The album was released on August 26th, 2021. The album is produced by the two of them, with Manzenera playing the lead instrument and Finn doing the vocals.

Finn began performing music with his younger brother Neil in 1989 for an imagined Finn brothers album. Neil later suggested including the songs on Crowded House's new album after Split Enz dissolution. Tim co-wrote eight songs, including "Weather with You" and "Four Seasons in One Day" on the DVD.

Both Tim and Neil were named Officers of the Order of British Empire in 1993 for their contributions to music.

Finn and Finn became a member of the Finn Brothers in 1995. In 2004, Everyone Is Here, a second and final album, was released. According to a Mojo magazine review, it contained "some of the most haunting music to bear Finn imprint."

Former Split Enz keyboardist Eddie Rayner co-created Forenzics in 2020. Forenzics is a research project that will see a evolution of Mental Notes' songs (Split Enz album). Finn and Rayner, as well as Phil Manzanera who was instrumental in the redevelopment of Mental Notes (into Second Thoughts (album)). The initial singles "Chances Are" and "Premiere Fois" were released in November 2021, but "Walking," "Strange Stars," and "Abandoned" were not released before on YouTube (from early 2020 to early 2021).
