Tim Coronel Career

Racing career

Tim took his first steps in racing by winning the Dutch Citron AX Cup in 1994 as a 22-year-old. He continued his success by winning seventh and then fifth in the Formula Opel Eurocup for two years. In 1997, he competed in the German F3. He began racing a Mitsubishi Carisma in 1998 in the Dutch Championship, finishing eleventh, sixth, and then third over three years. He rode a Lexus IS200 in 2001, placing fifth and finishing fourth in a Renault Clio. In 2003 and 2005, he won the Dutch Alfa Romeo 147 Challenge and the Dutch Porsche GT3 Cup. He competed in the Dutch BMW 130i Cup from 2006 to 2008, before moving to the SEAT León Eurocup for 2009. He placed third and fourth in the two events, making him the top scorer of the weekend, meaning he took a one-off drive in a SEAT León TFSI for SUNRED Engineering at Brno. In the WTCC, SUNRED Engineering is also the team that his twin brother Tom drives for.

Tim and Tom Coronel competed in the Dakar Rally in a Bowler Nemesis in January 2009. In a McRae Buggy's 2010 and 2011 Dakar rally, he competed again, winning both times as a solo racer. Tim took part in the Dakar Rally in 2012, this time with the McRae Buggy, after plans for a complete electrical version of Buggy turned out to be too ambitious.
