Rishi Sunak has sparked a row after lining up Sir Tim Barrow, his national security adviser, as Britain's next ambassador to the US. The Prime Minister is said to have plumped for Sir Tim, who played a key role in the Brexit negotiations with the EU, for the prestigious position. He is expected to take over from Dame Karen Pierce, the current ambassador, after the US election in November. But Mr Sunak prompted anger from Labour who questioned why the PM was 'rushing through' a key diplomatic appointment before the UK's own general election. They warned they could 'revisit' Sir Tim's appointment if Sir Keir Starmer replaces Mr Sunak in Downing Street. Mr Sunak's decision to send Sir Tim to Washington DC is also a blow to those who had been touting Nigel Farage , an ally of Donald Trump , for the ambassadorship.

The Sudanese army has agreed to extend its truce with RSF, a paramilitary group that has fought for another 72 hours, ahead of a last-gasp evacuation flight for Britons on Monday. The last evacuation flight, which had been stranded, would have left the Wadi Saeedna airfield at 10 p.m. local time on Saturday night. Since fighting began, more than 2,000 people have been flown out on 23 flights from an airfield near Khartoum, but more than 1,000 UK nationals will remain. The head of the armed forces said on Sunday that he is 'pleased' with how the evacuation from Sudan has progressed, ahead of an additional flight out of the war-torn country on Monday.

Liz Truss (left) had originally intended to replace Simon Case (inset) as Cabinet Secretary, but is said to have been impressed with his service during Boris Johnson's handover of power. Mr Case, who was drafted in by Mr Johnson, has also been instrumental in determining the new energy bill freeze policy and arranging the Queen's state funeral. The prime minister is already being chastised after being sacked as the head of the Treasury last week.
