The survivors of a Soviet-era town in eastern Kazakhstan, where 456 bombs were detonated on their doorstep, have described the devastating effect the explosions had on their health, with cancer and severe birth defects. Thomas Brag and Staffan Taylor, a filmmaker, travelled to Kurchatov, a top-secret town established in 1947 as the Soviet Union's nuclear program's headquarters. It wasn't even evident on maps at the time.
