Therese Johaug (born 25 June 1988) is a Norwegian cross-country skier who has competed for the clubs Tynset IF and IL Nansen.
She has won seven individual gold medals as well as three gold medals in relays, and she is a three-time Olympic medalist.
Due to a positive drug test, Johaug was banned for a period of 18 months.
Athletic career
Johaug won a bronze at the Norwegian Championships in 2006 after skiing various domestic races in the 2006 season. She was ranked in two World Cup qualifying races over ten kilometers, placing eighth and 33rd in two interval start races over ten kilometers, which was enough to qualify for participation in the 30 km distance at the 2007 Sapporo World Championships, where she earned a surprising bronze medal.
She captured gold in the 4 5 km relay at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, her sixth in the 15 kilometers run-up and seventh in the 30 km mass start (classic) event.
At the 2011 World Championships in Oslo, Johaug captured her first individual gold medal in the 30 km mass start race. She earned gold in the 4 x 5 km relay, bronze in the 7.5 km + 7.5 km double pursuit, and fourth in the 10 km individual start. She captured her second individual gold medal in the 10 km freestyle competition at the 2013 World Championships.
She earned the silver medal in the 30 km mass start (free), the bronze medal in the 10 km classical, and finished fourth in the 15 km skiathlon in Sochi at the 2014 Winter Olympics.
In the 2013-14 edition of the Tour de Ski, Johaug and compatriot Martin Johnsrud Sundby became the first Norwegians to win the women's and men's races. In the 2013–14 FIS Cross-Country World Cup, Johaug took the overall and distance championships.
She won the Birkebeinerrennet ski marathon in 2015 in a time of 2.41.46 seconds. She won three gold medals in individual events (the 15km skiathlon and the 30km classic mass start) and one as part of the Norwegian women's team in the 4x5km relay in Falun this year.
Johaug won her second World Cup appearance in 2015–16 by overturning a 39-second deficit to Ingvild Flugstad stberg on the final stage, giving the total climb up Alpe Cermis a 2 minute 21 seconds over the runner-up. She continued to win the overall and distance World Cups, rounding off her season by winning the inaugural Ski Tour Canada in a similar manner to her Tour de Ski victory, eradicating Heidi Weng's 30-second lead in the final stage chase by a minute.
Johaug was coached by Egil Kristiansen until 2016, and she was dubbed "in fact her best mentor" by media reports [and she had] helped her master freestyle" skiing.
