Theresa Rebeck (born February 19, 1958) is an American playwright, television writer, and novelist.

Her work has appeared on stage, off-Broadway, and on television.

The Mystery Writers of America's Edgar Award is one of her honors.

She was named recipient of the Athena Film Festival Award for Excellence in 2012 as a Playwright and Author of Films, Books, and Television.

Her works have inspired American playwrights by bringing a feminist twist to her old works.

Early life and education

Rebeck was born in Kenwood, Ohio, and graduated from Ursuline Academy in Cincinnati in 1976. She earned her undergraduate degree at the University of Notre Dame in 1980 and then continued with three degrees from Brandeis University: an MA in English 1983, a MFA in Playwriting in 1986, and a PhD in Victorian melodrama awarded in 1989.

Personal life

Rebeck is married, lives in Park Slope, Brooklyn, with her husband Jess Lynn and two children. Both Cooper and Cleo have "Three Girls and their Brother" is dedicated to both Cooper and Cleo.

Past New York theatre performances include Mauritius on Broadway at the Biltmore Theatre Club; The Scene, Loose Knit, Mann and Spike Heels's Family; and a look at the Dome at Playwrights Horizons. Omnium Gatherum (co-written, finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2003) appeared at the Humana Festival and had a commercial run at the Variety Arts Theatre in 2003. Regina White, Justin Kirk, and Kristen Johnson appeared in The Understudy at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in the summer of 2008, and starred Julie White, Bradley Cooper, and Kristen Johnson, and was also in New York at the Roundabout Theatre from October 2009 to January 2010. In 2015, the off-Broadway and regional theatre comedy comedy at the Artists Repertory Theatre in Portland premiered. Rebeck was hired as a book writer for the forthcoming musical Ever After, based on the Drew Barrymore film of the same name. In April 2009, it was supposed to begin pre-Broadway tryouts in San Francisco, but it was postponed. Mauritius' performance appeared at the Pasadena Playhouse in California from March 27 to April 26, 2009.

Beginning in October 2011, Alan Rickman appeared in her play Seminar on Broadway, and she performed it on Broadway. The San Francisco Playhouse's first seminar of May 2014 received rave reviews. In February 2014, her play Fool appeared at the Alley Theatre in Houston, Texas. The subject of the play Seminar was women's liberation through sexuality and the challenges of being a female in a male-dominated industry.

In August 2014, she appeared on Off-Broadway at Primary Stages. In 2011, the play premiered at the Mark Taper Forum.

In an article published in The New York Times in September 2007, she said that her plays were about "betrayal and treason," as well as poor conduct. "A lot of bad behavior." Free Fire Zone, a collection of comedic essays on writing and show business, is one of Rebeck's other publications. She has written for American Theatre magazine and has had excerpts of her plays published in the Harvard Review. Random House/Shaye Areheart Books first book, Three Girls and Their Brother, was published in 2008 by Rebeck's first book, Three Girls and Their Brother.

She has received honors for her work on NYPD Blue, including the Mystery Writers of America Award for Episodic Drama, the Hispanic Images Imagen Award, and the Peabody Award. She has received the National Theatre Conference Award (for Mann's Family) and was given the William Inge New Voices Playwriting Award in 2003 for The Bells. Mauritius was first performed at Huntington Theatre in Boston, where it received the 2007 IRNE Award for Best New Play as well as the Elliot Norton Award. In 2010, Rebeck was honoured with the PEN/Laura Pels International Foundation for Theater Award for an American playwright in mid-career.

Rebeck has written for Dream On, Brooklyn Bridge, Los Angeles, USA, Maximum Bob, Maximum Bob, First Wave, and Third Watch. Smith, Smith, Law & Order: Criminal Intent and NYPD Blue, a writer/producer for Canterbury's Law. She was one of the executive producers for the NBC musical series Smash, which she created and which debuted on February 6, 2012. Harriet the Spy, Gossip, and the independent film on the Rocks are among her produced feature film screenplays.
