Personal life and business ventures
Ratliff attended basketball at Demopolis High School in Demopolis, Alabama, and later graduated from the University of Wyoming. He created Theo Ratliff Center in Demopolis, Alabama, which is a recreation center with a basketball court.
Ratliff was the manager of the Rome Gladiators basketball team.
College career
Ratliff had a fruitful career, culminating as the career leader in blocked shots at Wyoming. He shot 425 times in his career as a Cowboy, a record that still stands today. In 2005, Ratliff was inducted into the University of Wyoming Athletics Hall of Fame.
NBA career
Ratliff was chosen with the 18th overall pick in the 1995 NBA draft by the Detroit Pistons, for whom he played 21 years. He and Aaron McKie were traded to the Philadelphia 76ers along with Eric Montross and Jerry Stackhouse during the 1997-1998 season.
He was in Philadelphia for three seasons and was named Eastern Conference reserve center of the 2001 All-Star Game, but was unable to play due to injury. He was a key member of the 2000–01 Sixers team that made it to the NBA finals, but an injured Ratliff was dealt with the Atlanta Hawks just before the trade deadline for Dikembe Mutombo.
He missed the bulk of the season due to injury, but the Hawks bounced back to post 262 blocks in the next season. He had his best season as a pro in 2003–04, when he had a record-breaking 307 blocked shots. He was signed to the Portland Trail Blazers, as well as Shareef Abdur-Rahim and Dan Dickau for Rasheed Wallace and Wesley Persons during the offseason. He signed a three-year contract extension with the Blazers in 2004, but he was not as efficient in 2005–05 and lost his starting position to Joel Przybilla midway through the season.
The Boston Celtics acquired Ratliff and Sebastian Telfair of the Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for Randy Foye's draft rights and point guard Dan Dickau.
Kevin Garnett was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves in July 2007 alongside Gerald Green, Ryan Gomes, Al Jefferson, Sebastian Telfair, and draft picks. Ratliff was waived by the Timberwolves in February 2008, and he rejoined the Detroit Pistons in March.
Ratliff made his return to the Philadelphia 76ers in 2008-09 season. He was signed by the San Antonio Spurs in the offseason. In February 2010, he was traded to the Charlotte Bobcats for a projected second round draft pick in 2016.
Ratliff was signed by the Los Angeles Lakers on July 22, 2010 to a one-year contract.
