Personal life
In 1951, Moore married American football star and Heisman Trophy winner Glenn Davis (known as Mr. Outside) when he attended the United States Military Academy at West Point. The following year, they were divorced. Eugene McGarth's second marriage in 1956 lasted three years. Moore married Stuart Cramer after his separation from Jean Peters; the couple had two children together, Stuart Cramer IV and actor Grant Cramer, before divorcing in 1972. Moore screamed Richard F. Carey, a Mexican immigrant, a few days later, robbing her and others out of money. Jerry Rivers' 1992 marriage lasted until his death in 2001.
Moore became the object of public interest as a result of her friendship with Howard Hughes. In 1949, she and Hughes married in a ceremony held by a ship captain in international waters, according to Moore. Hughes said that she destroyed the ship's log that documented the marriage, and that by 1956, they broke apart from each other, but that she and Hughes were never divorced. "I didn't care whether I was a bigamist or not," Moore said of her subsequent marriages during Hughes' lifetime. "I mean, my desire to have children was so strong."
Moore's widowhood defense was denied based on judicial estoppel; she had stated in her divorce from Cramer that she had been married to him in 1959 and obtained a property settlement in that case, but her assertion that she married to Hughes at the time was incongruent and would not be considered unacceptable. Nonetheless, the Hughes family members decided that Moore had a long-term friendship with Hughes and reached a financial compromise with her. Moore described the deal as "not more than eight figures" in a biography; Hughes's biography indicates that the deal was $350,000.
In the early 1970s, Moore dated actor Glenn Ford.
