Taylor Townsend (born April 16, 1996) is an American professional tennis player.

She reached the No. 1 position in the WTA, the highest in the world, in her career. In July 2018, there were 61 people on the streets. In 2012, she was named the ITF Junior World Champion for finishing the year No. 1 in 2012. She is currently the first American to do so since 1982.

She won the junior Australian Open titles in both singles and doubles in the same year, and three out of four junior grand slam doubles titles in total.

Personal life and background

Taylor was born in Chicago to Gary and Sheila Townsend. Both her parents are high school teachers, and her mother used to work as a banker. Sheila played Division II tennis at Lincoln University in Missouri. Taylor's older sister, Symone, played college tennis at Florida A&M.

Townsend began playing tennis at the age of six, and was one of the first junior players to enroll in the XS Tennis project run by [Kamau Murray]. Murray is best known for his coaching Sloane Stephens to a grand slam title. She moved to Atlanta to continue training with Donald Young's father when she was eight years old. Townsend's mother is a close friend of Donald Young sr. as the two of them grew up together on Chicago's South Side, where they both trained at the same tennis center.

Townsend left Boca Raton, Florida, to enroll in the USTA's growth program at age 14. Murray and XS Tennis arranged a fundraiser to cover nearly $1000 of the trip's cost when the USTA refused to finance Townsend's expenses to compete at the 2012 US Open. Townsend spent time with Murray in Chicago and Zina Garrison in the Washington, D.C. area after that. Donald Young sr. has been her mentor since 2005. Townsend is trying to imitate her tennis hero Martina Navratilova.

Townsend revealed on social media on October 14, 2020. On March 14, 2021, she gave birth to her son Adyn Aubrey.

Junior career

Townsend won the 2012 Australian Open junior tournament, becoming only the second American to win the title after Kim Kessaris in 1989. Lindsay Davenport won both the singles and doubles titles at the same time, becoming the first American to win both singles and doubles at a junior Grand Slam tournament since Lindsay Davenport did the feat at the 1992 US Open. Townsend finished her climb to No. 1 a few months later and won the Easter Bowl to help finish her climb to No. 1. Before the end of April, there ranked No. 1 in the ITF junior rankings until the end of April.

Townsend continued her major successes in doubles that year by winning the Junior Wimbledon title with Eugenie Bouchard and the US Open with Gabrielle Andrews, who also competed at the Australian Open. The French Open, the only Grand Slam that escaped Townsend, was the French Open, where she lost in the semifinals while competing with Bouchard. In addition, she was able to win the US Open despite being asked to miss the tournament due to health issues. This was only the seventh year a player or team was able to win three out of four Grand Slam doubles titles, with senior Grand Slam winners Victoria Azarenka and Sloane Stephens leading the way. Townsend was the No. 1 in the season. 1 ranked junior in the world for which she was named the 2012 ITF Junior World Champion. She became the first American girl to be honoured since Gretchen Rush in 1982.

She continued to compete on the junior tour in 2013 and reached another Grand Slam singles final at Wimbledon, this time losing to Belinda Bencic. Professional career

Townsend won her first professional tournament in October 2010, aged 14 years old, and she was able to win her first match in her career. She competed in the 2011 US Open doubles tournament when she was 15 years old and advanced to the third round with compatriot Jessica Pegula. She also won a wildcard into the singles qualifying draw and defeated world No. 2 Eric Coveney in the singles qualifying draw. In the first round, Arantxa Parra Santonja defeated 122, Arantxa Parra Santonja. Townsend's enthusiasm for the 2012 US Open continued last year, but was turned down by the USTA due to Townsend's health concerns. The USTA's decision was widely chastised.

Townsend won the WTA Tour in singles at the 2013 Indian Wells Masters, defeating Lucie Hradecká for her first tour-level match victory. At the Washington Open, her next WTA main-draw appearance came at the Washington Open. Despite Townsend's defeat in singles, she also competed in doubles with Genie Bouchard, her doubles companion from Wimbledon's girls' doubles title last summer. The two players advanced to the final, the first time either player had ever been to the WTA final.

Townsend played at two clay-court matches on the USTA pro circuit at Charlottesville and Indian Harbour Beach, back-to-back weeks in the spring. At each of these events, she earned singles and doubles titles, her first two ITF titles. At both tournaments, Townsend was partnered with Asia Muhammad in doubles. She won the French Open with this success. Townsend made her Grand Slam singles debut at the French Open, ranked No. 28 in the French Open. The world's 205th richest country. She continued her winning both the singles and doubles championships at Charlottesville in April. She won the French Open Wild Card Challenge once more thanks to this effort. The previously profitable doubles team recombined to win five ITF doubles titles by the end of April, including back-to-back clay court titles at Pelham, Dothan, and Charlottesville, after partnering with Asia Muhammad just once in 2015. Townsend returned to the top 200 by May and then fell to No. 4 in the top 200. 154 after winning her first round match at the French Open. Her name has risen steadily to the top of the charts, with No. 14 securing her position as the best in the world. Near the year's end, the world has ranked 131 in the world's top 131. For the second time in her career, she won both singles and doubles tournaments at back-to-back tournaments, this time at the $25K level. Townsend appeared in the Waco Showdown and dominated the early rounds, losing only two games in her first three matches. Townsend captured this $80K event for the first time in her career. She has also returned to the top 100 after this success.

During the American ITF clay-court season, Townsend put on an outstanding show in the spring. She reached the semifinals at two out of the four tournaments (Indian Harbour Beach and Charlottesville) and captured the title at two other tournaments (Dothan and Charleston), both of which were $80K events. For the third time in her career, she defeated the French Open Wildcard Challenge in a surprisingly fast fashion. Townsend achieved a career-high position at No. 31 at the end of the year. The world's 73nd richest 73nd country.

She played for the Philadelphia Freedoms in the World TeamTennis league, where she was named the season's Female MVP. In the WTT Finals, the team lost.

Townsend defeated a top-ten competitor in the 2019 US Open, putting the world No. 1 up. In the second round, Simona Halep defeated four sets in a third-set tiebreaker. She took one step farther, defeating another Romanian Sorana Cincirstea in the third round for the first time in her career as a qualifier and a major champion.

For the first time in her career at a Grand Slam championship, she reached the semifinals in doubles for the first time in her career, partnering with Asia Muhammad.
