Svetlana Yuryevna Zakharova (born 10 June 1979) is a Russian prima ballerina with the Bolshoi Ballet and an étoile of the La Scala Theatre Ballet.
Early life
Svetlana Zakharova was born in Lutsk, Ukraine's Soviet Union, on June 10, 1979. She was recruited by her mother to learn folk dancing at a local studio, and by the age of 10, she had auditioned and was accepted into the Kyiv Choreography School. Valeria Sulegina was one of her instructors.
Zakharova competed in the Young Dancers' Competition (Vaganova-Prix) in St. Petersburg in 1995, after six years at the Kyiv School. She received second place in the Valiant Academy's graduating program in St Petersburg and was encouraged to continue her studies. It was the first time in the school's history that a student was allowed to skip two classes.
Zakharova joined the Mariinsky ballet in 1996 after attending the pre-eminent Russian ballet academy for a year.
Personal life
Zakharova is married to Russian violinist Vadim Repin, and they have one child, daughter Anna (b. ). (2011, the United Kingdom) is a republic in the United States. She had been forced to leave the Bolshoi Ballet tour to London in the summer of 2010 due to a hip injury; she was pregnant at the time. In a gala performance honoring Soviet ballerina Galina Ulanova, Zakharova returned to dancing and performed in London on May 15th.
