Susanne Bier Life

Susanne Bier (born 15 April 1960) is a Danish film director, screenwriter, and producer.

She is best known for her feature films Brothers, After the Wedding, In a Better World and Bird Box, and The Night Manager, a TV miniseries. Bier is the first female filmmaker to win a Golden Globe, an Emmy Award, and a European Film Award all together.

Early life and education

Susanne Bier was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, on April 15, 1960. Rudolf Salomon Baer (born 1930) emigrated from Germany to Denmark in 1933, the family of her father's defection from Germany to Denmark following Hitler's ascension to power. Heni (née Jonas), a woman from Russia, immigrated to Denmark at the start of the twentieth century to avoid rising anti-semitism. The two families migrated from Denmark to Sweden in 1943, with the majority of Danish Jews escaping the expulsion to the Nazi death camps. They returned to Denmark three years after the war ended. Bier's parents were able to instill the same moral values and principles in their children as a result of the Holocaust. The importance of human resilience and dignity will be a recurring theme in her films later.

She went to Niels Steens Gymnasium during her education. Bier admits to lacking social skills as a child, liked playing football with boys, and preferred reading books rather than talking to others in interviews with the media as an adult. She studied art at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem, citing a desire to reconnect with her Jewish roots. She would continue to study architecture at the Architectural Association in London before graduating from the National Film School of Denmark in 1987. De Saliges (1987), Bier's graduation film, received the first prize at the Munich film festival and was later distributed by Channel Four.

Personal life

Bier was married to Swedish actor and director Philip Zanden. Jesper Winge Leisner, a Danish singer and composer who produced the music for many of her films, met her new partner, Jesper Winge Leisner (da). Bier has two children. Gabriel Bier Gislason (born 5.7.1989), the son of Bier's first husband, Danish/Icelandic film director Tómas Gislason (da), is her first child. Gabriel is a film actor who appears in films like his parents. Alice Esther Zanden (born in 1995) is her second child.

Susanne Bier Career

Career

Freud Flytter Hjemmefra (1990), Det Bli's Families (Freud's Leaving Home), Pensionat Oscar (Like it Never Before 1995) and Sekten (Credo, 1997), Bier made a career change in Denmark with the film The One and Only in 1999. The film, which was a romantic comedy about the fragility of life, received a number of Danish Film Academy awards, as well as established Bier's friendship with actress Paprika Steen. The film remains one of Denmark's most popular domestic films ever made.

(Once in a Lifetime, 2000) An Elsker dig for evigt brought Bier's work to greater international notice and acclaim, prompting a lot more national attention and praise. Bier and Anders Thomas Jensen's film is an enthralling and moving film about fractured lives and intertwined tragedies. The film, which was made under Dogme 95 guidelines, also marked a shift toward a more minimalist aesthetic.

Bier's fame has grown with the harrowing Brody (Brothers, 2004) and the emotionally engaging Efter Bryllupt, which was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2007 Academy Awards. With her first American film, Things We Lost (2008) starring Benicio del Toro and Halle Berry, Bier went on to win the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in a Better World (2010).

With Den skaldede frissr (Love is All You Need) (2012), Trine Dyrholm and Pierce Brosnan starred, she returned to romantic comedy in 2012. Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper appeared in her second American film, dark romantic drama Serena, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Ulrich Thomsen, Nikolaj Lie Kaas, and Maria Bonnevie starred Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.

Bier's films, as well as a maker of shorts, music videos, and commercials, primarily focus on pain, tragedy, and atonement. Bier has been hired as a commercial director with SMUGGLER, a multinational production firm.

She appeared in 2013 as a member of the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival.

Bier was invited to Sweden to direct Freud's Leaving Home, which was critically acclaimed by film critics. Freud, a girl from Sweden who comes from a Jewish family, is the first Swedish film to portray Swedish-Jewish culture. "The film "addresses the Jewish experience to a degree that is unusual in Scandinavian cinema" due to its heavy Jewish focus. The film received ten awards and was nominated for three more.

Family Matters, her sister's fourth film, continued to explore complicated, taboooed family ties that began in Freud's Leaving Home, which also included an incestuous friendship between brother and sister.

In 1999, Bier returned to taboos with the film The One and Only. Sidse Babett Knudsen, Niels Olsen, Rafael Edholm, Rafael Edholm, and Paprika Steen appear in a film about two unfaithful married couples facing the challenge of becoming first-time parents. The film was considered to be the best film of 1999 by both the Robert Award and Bodil Award.

Bier produced the film Open Hearts in 2002, following the success of the Dogme 95 manifesto. Open Hearts tells the tale of two couples whose lives are traumaticized by a car accident and adultery.

On Rotten Tomatoes' movie review website, Open Hearts received a 96% approval rating. Susanne Bier received the International Critics Award at the 2002 Toronto International Film Festival "for the fact that Dogma has come of age and matured into a potent cinematic language that successfully captures the liberation of real emotions embedded within the lives of the characters in her film." In 2003, the film received both the Bodil and Robert awards for Best Danish Film.

We follow two brothers, Michael and Jannik, in Bier's next film. Michael has a promising military career, a stunning wife, and two beautiful children; in the film, Michael is shown preparing for a deployment to Afghanistan. Jannik, his younger brother, has been jailed for a failed bank robbery. Michael collected Jannik from jail the day before being sent to Afghanistan; their still fragile relationship is shown to be especially tense. While Michael's helicopter in Afghanistan is shot down, all soldiers are believed to have been killed, but Michael and a fellow soldier below him have been detained. Michael is eventually ordered to murder his fellow soldier. Sarah is aided by Jannik, who, against all odds, takes care of the family. Sarah and Jannik will get closer as he fulfills the space/role held by his brother. Michael is eventually saved by US forces and is able to return home, but with disastrous results. The film explores the war in Afghanistan in 2001 as well as the psychological aftermath of prisoners of war. The plot takes inspiration from Homer's Odyssey. Several accolades were given, including the audience award at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival and the Cannes Film Festival UCMF Movie Music Award, among others. On August 16, 2017, an opera based on the tale of Icelandic composer Danel Bjarnason's film premiered in Aarhus. Den Jyske Opera's commissioning it was awarded. Kerstin Perski wrote the libretto, and Kasper Holten was the producer. Three stage works were created to celebrate Aarhus as the European capital of culture in 2017; a musical, dance, and an opera based on Bier films were commissioned and performed in Musikhuset.

Jacob Petersen, who runs an Indian orphanage, is the subject of Bier's next film. With a small workforce, he works as hard as he can to keep the orphanage afloat and is personally invested in the children - particularly Pramod, a young boy Jacob has cared for since the boy's birth. The film was a critical and popular success, and it was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

Richard Schickel of Time magazine named the film as one of the top ten Movies of 2007, naming it as a "dark, richly mounted film." Schickel thought the film was possibly "old-fashioned stylistically and more manipulative in its plotting," he also found "something deeply satisfying in the way it brings out the fates of its characters' confused, believable characters."

After the Wedding in 2019, starring Julianne Moore, Michelle Williams, and Billy Crudup, the film was remade as the English-language.

We follow Audrey, who has been married for eleven years with Brian and leads a healthy life, but her husband dies after attempting to protect a woman from an assault. Audrey is left alone with two children, so she decides to welcome Jerry, her friend's friend, with drug use issues. Both the two partners will form a union that will bring them together and help each other make a change in their lives, which will be challenging in their search for happiness.

Critics generally gave the film high marks. Based on 117 reviews, 64% of critics gave the film positive feedback as of January 29, 2008. Based on 30 reviews, the film received an average score of 63 out of 100. Both leads received acclaim for their portrayal of Jerry, particularly Benicio Del Toro, as he received acclaim for his performance, which was one of his finest roles to date.

Anders Thomas Jensen's "the revenge" film in a Better World (Danish: Hvnen) is a 2010 Danish drama thriller film directed by Susanne Bier. In a tale that takes place in small-town Denmark and a refugee camp in Africa, Mikael Persbrandt, Trine Dyrholm, and Ulrich Thomsen appears.

In a Better World, a Danish majority production with co-producers in Sweden, received the 2011 Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film as well as the award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 83rd Academy Awards.

"Our experiment in this film is about finding out how little it really takes before a child – or an adult – thinks something is deeply wrong," director Susanne Bier said. It really doesn't take much, and I find it incredibly interesting. "It's scary."

Rotten Tomatoes is a review publication that publishes reviews from 77% of 114 expert commentators, with the website consensus stating that "In a Better World is a sumptuous melodrama that addresses some rather difficult existential and human topics." Metacritic gave the film a score of 65, indicating "generally favorable reviews."

In Politiken, Kim Skotte called the film a "powerful and captivating drama." He selected In a Better World to be the one most similar to Jensen's solo films, and compared the combination of biblical themes and high entertainment value to Jensen's 2005 film Adam's Apples. Peter Nielsen of Dagbladet Information said In a Better World "in every way a good film" and although Susanne Bier can seduce and push the absolute right emotional buttons so that mothers' hearts and father's hearts are struck, she does not earnestly drill her inquiry into the meat."

Love Is All You Need in 2012 (Den skaldede frisr), Lit. a 2012 Danish romantic comedy film starring Pierce Brosnan and Trine Dyrholm. The Bald Hairdresser (British Cinematic Society)

At the 26th European Film Awards in 2013, Love Is All You Need was selected as the best comedy film.

Serena, based on American author Ron Rash's 2008 book of the same name, was directed by Bier in 2014. Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper appear as newlyweds operating a timber business in 1930s North Carolina.

Critics also had scathing remarks about Serena. The film on Rotten Tomatoes has a score of 16% based on 106 reviews with an average rating of 4.3/10. "Serena unites an impressive array of talent on either side of the camera, prompting viewers to wonder how it all went wrong." The film on Metacritic has a score of 36 out of 100 based on critiques from 29 reviewers, indicating that "generally unfavorable reviews" are the basis for its decision.

A second Chance (Danish: Encounter til), a Danish thriller film, was directed by Bier in 2014. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Ulrich Thomsen, Maria Bonnevie, Nikolaj Lie Kaas, and Lykke May Andersen appear in the film. It was featured in the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival's Special Presentations section.

Bier produced The Night Manager, a British television serial starring Tom Hiddleston, Hugh Laurie, Olivia Colman, David Harewood, Tom Hollander, and Elizabeth Debicki, taking a break from film. It's based on John le Carré's 1993 book of the same name and adapted to David Farr's today. On February 21, 2016, the six-part series premiered on BBC One. On AMC, it began on April 19, 2016. It has been exported to over 180 countries worldwide, and the BBC and AMC have produced a second series. Matthew Orton, Charles Cumming, Namsi Khan, and Francesca Gardiner were all scripting for the second series.

The Night Manager's first series of The Night Manager was nominated for 36 awards and received 11, including two Primetime Emmy Awards (for producer Bier and music composer Victor Reyes) and three Golden Globe Awards (for Hiddleston, Colman, and Laurie).

The series received acclaim for its broad critical success. "It's more than 20 years since the book was published, and two film companies have attempted and failed to adapt it," Adam Sisman, Le Carré's biographer, said in the UK's daily newspaper The Daily Telegraph, "It's 20 years since it was published, and in that time two film companies have tried and failed to convert it, saying that it was impossible to compress into two hours." This six-hour television adaptation is, however, long enough to warrant the book's respect." "And although Hugh Laurie may have chosen "the worst man in the world" as the "most convincing villain," he says. In a restaurant, alert viewers may recognize a familiar face: John le Carré himself makes a cameo in the films A Most Wanted Man and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. However, he is only on screen for a moment: blink and you'll miss him."

Bier produced Bird Box, an American post-apocalyptic horror film starring Kevin Hart. Eric Heisserer's screenplay was based on Josh Malerman's 2014 book of the same name. Sandra Bullock appears in the film, which was also its world premiere at AFI Fest on November 12, 2018. Netflix unveiled it in the world on December 21, 2018 and quickly became the most watched film in Netflix history.

Bird Box has received mixed to critical feedback on Metacritic. It was described as a "truly sad film" by Forbes.
