Early life

Musgrave was born on August 19, 1935, the son of Percy Musgrave Jr. (1903-1973) and Marguerite Warton Musgrave (1909–1982). He grew up in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, but he prefers Lexington, Kentucky, to be his hometown.

Musgrave has deep roots in New England, descending from Mayflower Passengers John Howland and John Tilley, as well as early settler Richard Saltonstall of Watertown, Massachusetts. Richard Saltonstall (mayor), Lord Mayor of London, was his uncle.

William Gray, a lieutenant governor of Massachusetts from 1810 to 1812, was his 4th great-grandfather, as well as a Massachusetts state senator and senator. Horace Gray, Massachusetts Supreme Court Justice from 1864 to 1882, and the United States Supreme Court Justice from 1882 to 1902.

Franklin Howard Story Jr. (1825–1900) and his 3rd great-grandfather, Franklin Howard Story (1795–1871). Elisha Story (1743-1855), his 4th great-grandfather, was a participant in the Boston Tea Party in 1773. Joseph Story's uncle, Elisha's fourth great-uncle), served in Massachusetts as both a Massachusetts congressman and a United States Supreme Court Justice from 1812 to 1845. Joseph's uncle (Musgrave's 1st cousin, who had been deposed four times) was artist and sculptor William Wetmore. William's uncle (Musgrave's second cousin, thrice removed) was painter Julian Russell Story.

Musgrave attended Dexter Southfield School in Brookline, Massachusetts, and St. Mark's School in Southborough, Massachusetts, from 1947 to 1953. He dropped out of St. Mark's in his senior year after a car accident "caused him to miss a significant pre-graduation exam."

Personal life

He has seven children, one of whom is deceased. His interests include chess, flying, gardening, literary analysis, microcomputers, parachuting, photography, running, and soaring.

Musgrave was stalked by Margaret Mary Ray, a schizophrenic woman who had already served a prison term for stalking comedian David Letterman in the early 1990s.
