He has been hosting The Steve Wilkos Show since 2007, and has been in charge of security on The Jerry Springer Show from 1994 to 2007.
Before being given his own talk show, he had previously substituted Springer for Springer as host on several occasions.
Early life and education
Wilkos was born in Chicago and was one of four children in what now is known as the Roscoe Village neighborhood. Jeanette (née Pelikan), a beauty school instructor, and Stanley Wilkos, a former police officer who served in the Korean War as an army paratrooper, are among his parents. In 1982, he graduated from Lane Technical High School.
Personal life
Wilkos had previously married Rosae Wilkos and Hannah Wilkos. Both marriages ended in divorce.
In 2000, he married Rachelle Consiglio, the executive producer for Jerry Springer as well as his own show. They have two children. They lived in Park Ridge, Illinois, until locating to Darien, Connecticut, where the Steve Wilkos Show brought production to nearby Stamford. Wilkos bought his Park Ridge home for $750,000 in 2015. In Camp Lake, Wisconsin, Wilkos also owns a summer home.
Wilkos refers to himself as a Republican. Wilkos described Clinton and Trump as "poor" candidates in an interview after the 2016 election, but said he was "glad" that Trump defeated him.
Wilkos was charged with impaired driving on January 21, 2018 after a rollover accident near his house on January 20, 2018. He has requested a judge for an alternative punishment that would result in accusations being dismissed after the completion of an education and rehabilitation program.
Career
Wilkos joined the United States Marine Corps in October 1982, serving in South Korea, Japan, Illinois, Virginia, and South Carolina before being discharged in March 1989.
Wilkos joined the Chicago Police Department in 1990, where he was stationed in various areas of Logan Square, Chicago, Humboldt Park, and Near West Side neighborhoods.
Jerry Springer's designers, who were taped in Chicago at the time, needed security guards, so they hired Wilkos and other off-duty police officers to work part-time for the show. Wilkos recruited several fellow officers for the position, but he resigned from the service in 2004 and spent exclusively for the show from 2001 to 2005.
Wilkos became a professional wrestler with the Maryland Championship Wrestling during Jerry Springer's absence due to a temporary production halt. Wilkos appeared as a guest on Check, Please!, a restaurant-reviewing service on Chicago's PBS station, WTTW, in 2005. Wilkos filled in for him in the meanwhile, and Springer later recruited Wilkos to substitute for him each Monday, making him "the natural choice."
Jerry Springer has appeared on MLB Network for the first time beyond Jerry Springer. He has appeared on television shows Between Brothers, The Wayans Bros, and in the film Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me as Jerry Springer's security guard.
Wilkos will host a talk show of his own based at NBC Tower in Chicago in January 2007. The self-titled program premiered on September 10, 2007, receiving high ratings. Steve is known for his abrasive approach to settling disputes on his own show, covering a variety of topics such as child abuse, molestation, and cheating partners.
As he reflected: "All I did was yell at everybody and kick people off the stage," Wilkos expressed dissatisfaction with the first season of the talk show. There was no emotion involved — just hardcore yelling." Wilkos said this was how he was conceived by his first executive producer, but that his wife encouraged him to be himself and go with his "guts."
The Steve Wilkos Show aired mainly on Fox, MyNetworkTV, and The CW affiliates, as other tabloid talk shows. Only scattered ABC, CBS, and NBC affiliates in smaller markets carried it to fill their timeslot. The Steve Wilkos Show has been airing on CW Plus since 2007, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., every weekday.
