Personal life
Steve and his wife Lori, have two children, a daughter Lauren Thomas (1994) and a son Christian Thomas (1992) , who is under contract with the KooKoo of the Liiga. Christian Thomas was drafted 40th overall by the New York Rangers in the 2nd round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. In his third OHL season in 2010–11, Christian Thomas finished second in the league with 54 goals and sixth in the league in scoring with 99 points, while also tying for the league lead in power play goals. Steve and Christian Thomas are the first father son combination to each score 50 goals in a single OHL season.
Playing career
Thomas was born in Stockport, England, but he was raised in Markham, Ontario, Canada, where he attended Markham District High School. As he often failed in school due to his hockey skills, he had a mentor remind him to "smarten up, Steve; hockey can only take you so far." He played junior hockey for the Toronto Marlboros of the OHL (he was the last original Toronto Marlboros to make it to the Maple Leafs of the NHL). Thomas earned the Dudley "Red" Garrett Memorial Award in 1985 as the best rookie in the American Hockey League while playing for the St. Catharines Saints prior to playing in the NHL.
Thomas went undrafted early in his junior career but was hired as a Free Agent with the Toronto Maple Leafs. In the 1984–85 season, he began his NHL career. With Toronto, he turned into a bona-fide NHL goal scorer, scoring 35 goals in the 1986–87 season. He was drafted to the Chicago Blackhawks in 1991-92 and was then traded to the New York Islanders.
Thomas will spend his best years with the Islanders. Thomas scored 37 goals and 50 assists in a career-best of 87 points in the 1992-93 season. Thomas and teammate Ray Ferraro were the unexpected heroes of the Islander's playoff run when he was hospitalized by a Dale Hunter check in the first round. Both players qualified for the top ten in postseason scoring as the Islanders made their Cinderella appearance to the Prince of Wales Conference finals. With 42 goals this year, he reached a career-high in aspirations.
Thomas appeared with the Leafs (1998–2001) and Chicago (2001–2002) before transferring to Anaheim's Mighty Ducks. His time in Chicago seemed to be over, but the Ducks' trade to Chicago resurrects his career. Thomas had 10 goals in the final 12 games of the season, with the Ducks, and he added four more goals in the playoffs as his team advanced to their first Stanley Cup Finals appearances. Thomas' absence had harmed his former teammates, and the Ducks wanted to hold him for 2003-2004.
Despite being deemed a superb playoff player, Thomas was never able to win a Stanley Cup in his career. He came close in 2002–03 when his Mighty Ducks of Anaheim made it to the Stanley Cup Finals, the first of his and the team's debuts, but the New Jersey Devils lost in a close 7 games to the New Jersey Devils.
Thomas signed a one-year deal with the Detroit Red Wings from 2003 to 2004 before the NHL lockout in 2004. He was an excellent line with rookie Pavel Datsyuk and Brett Hull. Thomas had ten points in 13 games this season, and he had more ice time than he had expected due to injuries on the Wings' roster. The Wings finished first in the league but lost in the second round of the playoffs to the Calgary Flames.
He was accepted to the Toronto Maple Leafs tryout in 2005, but he was suspended before the regular season began.
Post playing career
He served as an Assistant/Mentor Coach for the St. Michael's Buzzers, a Jr. A team in Toronto.
Thomas was named player growth consultant for the Tampa Bay Lightning on September 3, 2010, working with former Red Wings teammates Steve Yzerman, who served as Tampa Bay's general manager, as well as former Red Wings teammate Steve Yzerman. Thomas was in possession of oversawing all of Tampa Bay's prospects under his leadership. He served as the Lightning's assistant coach from 2012-2016.
