Steve Lavin Life

Stephen Michael Lavin (born September 4, 1964) is an American broadcaster for Fox Sports, CBS Sports, and Pac-12 Network.

Lavin served as head coach of two storied college basketball programs, most recently at St. John's University in New York City and earlier UCLA. In eleven years as a head coach, Lavin has led teams to ten postseason appearances, eight NCAA Tournament berths, an Elite Eight ('97), five NCAA Regional Semifinals ('97, '01, '02), and nine campaigns of 20 or more wins.

Early life

Lavin was born in San Francisco on September 4, 1964. He was born in Marin County and attended Ross Grammar School before attending Sir Francis Drake High School in San Anselmo, California, where he was a member of the 1982 California state championship team, winning with a 34-0 record.

Lavin began playing basketball at San Francisco State University, where he spent two years on the basketball team. He enrolled at Chapman University, where he graduated in 1988 with a bachelor's degree in communications.

When Lavin was hired as an assistant by Purdue head coach Gene Keady, his teaching career began in 1988. After three years on Boilermaker staff, Lavin returned to California when UCLA head coach Jim Harrick recruited him as a Bruins assistant in 1991.

Lavin served as an assistant coach on UCLA's staff for five years, including the 1995 national championship team, which had a 32-1 record.

Steve Lavin Career

Coaching career

UCLA fired Jim Harrick shortly before the 1996 season for concerns relating to harassment at a recruiting dinner. Lavin was the assistant on staff with the longest experience at UCLA and was chosen as interim head coach.

UCLA formally named him as the 11th head coach later this season, with the Bruins tied for first place in the Pac-10 with an 8–3 record. The Bruins won their next 11 games on their way to the Pac-10 championship before being eliminated by the Minnesota Gophers in the NCAA Midwest Regional Final.

Notable Lavin achievements at UCLA:

Following Lavin's first losing season at UCLA (10–19), Lavin was fired from his position as head coach in March 2003.

In 2010, Lavin was hired as the head men's basketball coach at St. John's University. During Lavin's tenure, three of his teams won 20 or more victories, including two NCAA appearances.

In Lavin's first year, he coached the Red Storm to a 21-12 record. The 21 wins were St. John's first appearance since the 2002-03 season, the first since 2002.

In 2009-10, Lavin inherited a squad that finished in 13th place in the Big East Conference. The same players played at 12-6 last year. In Big East Conference history, a surge of similar size had only occurred once before.

The Red Storm finished 18th in the Associated Press Top 25, the first time the Red Storm qualified for the postseason as a ranked team since 2000-01. The Red Storm recorded a 7-1 record at Madison Square Garden and saw its home attendance climb by 38.1 percent, marking the fourth-largest jump in NCAA Division I men's basketball.

When his doctors changed his schedule during recovery, Lavin underwent chemotherapy on October 6, 2011, he was only coaching four games in the 2011-12 season.

St. John's ended with a 17-16 overall record in 2012-13, Lavin's third year as head coach. The Red Storm won a buzzer at St. Joseph's before losing in the next game to Virginia.

In the 2013-14 season, Lavin led the Red Storm to a 20-13 record finishing conference play, resulting in an invitation to the NIT after being humiliated by Robert Morris.

Lavin led St. John's to a 21-12 record and their second appearance in the NCAA tournament in 2014.

Lavin was fired almost immediately after the season came to an end, on March 27, 2015. He then returned to his position as a college basketball television analyst in the studio and in the game booth.

Broadcasting career

Lavin began his broadcasting career in 2003, shortly after being fired from UCLA, when he signed a multi-year contract with ABC and ESPN. He appeared on ESPN College GameNight on a daily basis and gave color commentary with his colleagues Brent Musburger and Dave O'Brien at prime-time college games around the country for seven years. In addition, Lavin contributed to ESPN's coverage of the NBA draft.

After being fired by St. John's Lavin as a college basketball and NBA analyst, Lavin joined the Fox Sports, CBS Sports, and Pac-12 Network broadcasting staffs as a college basketball and NBA analyst.
